No meds yes or no

Has anyone had to wean themselves off of meds don't want to but I can't afford it plus can't try anything else because I have phobia of meds. Was frightened into taking what I'm on which is very addicting an I think I'm on low dosage it is 2mg of Ativan a day. I just don't know what to do this causing anxiety !!!

Hi

If you are going to wean yourself of meds I would always advise , asking your GP , depending how long you have been taking them etc , can be best to very slowly come of them as little as reducing half a tablet a week , but it really does all depend on how long you have been taking them

I expect you get these from the GP

Could you ask maybe if they give you say 28 tablets a month , to double that on one perscription as you are struggling with the expense , just a thought

If you are going to do this on your own though , I would do it slowly

I hope you work something out , let us no how you go on

Love

On my own I just don't know how when u say half a tab a week I've been on them a little over a year an is that a high dosage I'm sorry for being a pest xxx

Now I am not a doctor of course :-/ but thats a low dose

If I had been on them a year 2mg once a day ?

I think I would drop 1tablet a week to start with , then see how I felt , if I was ok , then maybe cut another one of a week later . I would take it slow though as I think they are addictive maybe , not sure , so you wouldnt want to get bad with drawels

Is there a reason you dont want to ask GP for their advice, they would be best , but if you do it yourself , dont rush it & as you drop a med , make sure you feel comfortable before you reduce another one if you no what I mean , but also remember thats just how I would do it , but doesnt mean I am right

And you are not a pest :-/

I presume you bought these meds yourself? Presumably therefore you knew what you were buying? I don;t therefore understand why you were frightened into taking them? Ativan 2mg is a HIGH dose of Benzodiazepine tranquilliser (your dose is equivalent to 20mg of Valium). Certainly it will kill anxiety but it is also highly addictive, though I'm sure you know that already. I'm sorry Rhimisings but I don't think its fair to ask for help on here in your deciding whether or not to continue to take, what is in reality a class c drug and one which most GP's refuse to prescribe. You have to decide for yourself. I would recommend you at least tell your GP and then enter a program of gradual reduction to avoid pretty horendous withdrawel symptoms.

this is an awful answer to give to someone who is looking for advice, its nobodys business how anyone gets there meds, and its not your place to judge anyone, people come on here ,when they'er feeling bad,to find some comfort in talking..I think its you who shouldn't come on here with that attitude....

mimsings, I don't think we were aware of your full situation in the first place, since you didn't say how you had obtained the Ativan. Coming off them is certainly possible, but you need a lot of support to do it and you can only do it gradually. How long it will take will depend on the length of time you've already been on them and how determined you are to come off. There are even some support groups specifically for this, such as the one in Manchester which meets weekly.
