Terrible way to live.

Afraid of something that has not happened yet and still remains the unknown but yet the mind makes it seem as though its real and is about to happen. Why the hell do we fear the unknown? We can't see it, can't hear it, can't feel it but yet we fear it. Anyone understand what I'm saying?

I think we fear the unknown because that's exactly what it is , unknown , so we cant be prepared as we don't no what it is ...if you understand what I am saying ;-)

For me I like to plan , know whats coming , keeps my anxiety lower

Try keeping the thoughts out of your mind , I no its hard , but tell them you are not going to listen , takes practise , but the more we keep throwing the thoughts out , the fear will get less

What you have written sums up my life for the last 4 years. I dread the future, the unknown, fear things that could happen, my mind is like a prison making my anxiety spiral out of control. I wake each day with dread, I go to work each day with dread, eyes to the ground incase people know what I am worrying about and they think I am a horrible person. The only time I get a rest is when I am asleep. I could sleep 24/7 but have to get up and try to face each day. What you have written strikes so true........................if you feel remotely the way I do then I send you any positive thoughts I can manage, you are so not alone xx

I told my CBT therapist that I am scared of the unknown. He said 'are you scared of muchalingos?' I said 'what are they?' He replied 'it doesn't matter, they are unknown so are you scared of them?' I said 'how can I be scared of something when I don't know what it is?' 'Ohhh' he said....'that's got you thinking. You are not scared of the unknown because it is impossible to be scared of the unknown, you are afraid of something bad from the past happening again.'

When you think about it it's quite true! I very much share your fear, but I think what my therapist said has allowed me to start trying to understand what it is that has happend before that I am scared of rather that sitting there worrying about nothing in particular! Hopefully if I can figure out what it is Ivan stop being scared!

I have a...mantra, I guess. When I recognize those thoughts, I say, "I am strong. I am capable. I will overcome." It works for me.
