Not for everyone i agree but for me a change for the better.

Apart from heart medication which is essential that I must take,I took myself off all antidepressants, melatonin etc etc several months ago which i've been prescribed for many years. In my opinion they solve nothing in the long term, they can mess your head up and make us dependant on prescribed medication for a long time, and what are they doing to our insides.?

Maybe these medications help in the short term, but not for any length of time.!

Many GP's are eager to dish out medication to shut us up,but that is not the answer.

Of course we get times of distress, sadness and anxiety but medication does not give us what we need, and in my case my head is now much clearer than i can remember.

By removing the cloud of dependence on prescription medication i feel free.

My view on medication for depression is that it's a plaster on a deep wound as it only treats the symptoms not the causes!

Hi cat I said that to my friend about her husband and I refused to take them as it was my life circumstances that caused my low mood etc there was nothing wrong my brain chemicals, they put my friends husband on wrong ones and he got worst then a specialist changed his meds eventually he was able to go back to his job that had caused this depresshion not the responsibility he had before at first but eventually he did get that back he is now tryner seen off them but is afraid he can't be without them, i never reached Deep depresshion I read if not dealt with s a p it can get bad and then the brain chemicals are effected and that's when meds are a last resort, I guess we're all wired up a bit different and some need that route 🤗😽

With all due respect, medications work for me and have helped me function thru challenging times such as being the sole caregiver when my mother had stage 4pancreatic cancer.

As i say we are all different and i was the sole carer for my husband for 7 long years and he had Vascular Dementia, plus i was running a business, and it was terrible, and i was on antidepressants at the time but not sure if they helped or not.?

I agree Shnookie , they were a Godsend to me last year when I had a bit of a meltdown, at the time I would have tried anything, I’m down to the lowest dose now with no problems and hopefully will be off them soon, But I would never say never, we don’t know what’s around the corner, some try things like alchohol which are equally bad for us if not worse, some try therapy which they don’t find helpful either, it’s all trial and error , never say never 👍

This is my first time posting on this site, so hopefully I’ll not make too many mistakes. I think it’s hard to know whether meds are the right thing for us, or alternative therapies. Only trial and error can show this although it can be very hard. I have been on antidepressants since 2000, following a nervous breakdown a few years earlier ( sorry, I know this phrase is no longer really used by professionals, but that’s how I would describe my feelings- like I was crumbling, disintegrating, falling down). I have tried so hard to help myself over the years with psychotherapy, acupuncture and even tried rTMS recently in the hope that I could wean myself off medication and feel healthier. Unfortunately, I could not and still use them (Originally Paroxetine and now Fluoxetine and Quetiapine and Melatonin for sleep). I am trying to supplement them with CBT now and yoga therapy. I have also applied to my psychiatrist to change them as I have been under a lot of stress in the last six months and felt like I was ‘braking down’ again. It is so very hard, but we have to do what we can. Any advice/support would be most welcome.

I believe it can be positive to use a combination of things to balance one’s mental health. An example of this would be meds combined with CBT, journaling, exercise, hobbies U like, positive visualization, listening to music U like among other things

I agree I was offered medication I choose therepy that didn't help much as was once week then fortnight I choose self help swimming and meditation cd, I even tried to self help my menapausal symptoms with food and endless soya milk unfortunetely due to 3 hours sleep per night I had to go on low dose HRT patches, my hot flushes became unbearable, my friends husband's on antidepressants and he's having to get weaned off, on the liver site someone got damage from them of course all drugs go through our organs, so unless it's vital like people with bipolar or heart problems etc I'd say No try alternatives first and I even have quit alcohol now, I'm in the sun now in window to help my seasonal associated disorder but I shall limit my exposure as I don't want skin cancer which I had or damaged skin,I think exercise is they key and keeping ones mind occupied I'm lucky enough I can walk moderately and swim I am in pain sometimes with various things but I don't even take pain relief unless I can't bear it anymore, and as you say it's too easy for doctors to write prescriptions antidepressants don't even work straight away from what I'm aware, glad you are coping better now 🤗.xx I found cognitive behaviour therepy helpful

I agree with the points you make, especially the GP’s willingness to prescribe meds; that’s their job and they don’t know what will work either, so it’s almost like throwing darts in the dark hoping one will land. But meds do help with the biochemical side of things even in the short run. I know it’s help me. It’s like giving you a little push to get things going. In the long run though, it’s still up to you to get yourself in order. Habits are what matters going forward.

in reply to Kainan

I was told by a medication specialist I would have to take meds for life as my condition now gone for 8 years said will come back ulcerative colitis by the time I got to see the med man I had cured myself with diet or some miracle, as I now eat normal, I never took the meds I'd have severe bone problems if I had have so I read, I researched my condition thoroughly, and on my last check up just after I saw the med man a different specialist examined me and said my colons heeled carry on doing what your doing no need for meds, I've heard a lot of doctors and specialists have there own ideas.

I did that with HRT I refused to take it and got through the menopause fine, it’s up to us what we decide to do with our bodies, I lost my Aunt at 60 and several friends with breast cancer, all were taking HRT. So decided I would never ever take it.

in reply to Arymretep

Hi M I don't have any cancer in family or I wouldn't have risked it and the specialist said it's good for my anxiety too, I never took it for full year when things were really bad with my rat problem etc and panic attacks, as they had problem with the glue lol on the patches, I copied but I don't think the stress did my heart any good in fact I keep having funny turns and off beats not too bad and it's been ok lately,it's when I'm over doing things and upset could be hypertension, and it frightened me into stopping drinking I am waiting to get through to doctors for a telephone appointment for blood test, hope your enjoying the sun I got burnt over weekend so I'm staying in shade, pixie is too lol 🤗😽

in reply to

Last year I had to wait 6 weeks for a blood test!

in reply to Arymretep

Arymretep in reply to

It’s all about trusting your Dr I suppose , the same as with antidepressants 👍

in reply to Arymretep

Last time I spoke to mine he said you don't need blood test he said my heart and tiredness was my sinus allergy it does contribute I know, and he said you had one last July, the thing is I like one every year to checks all's ok and I have to insist and say I have family history of heart problems he let me have one couple years ago even tho said then you don't need it it all find I said that was a year ago it turned out I had high liver count and had to be monitored and some other counts wernt great, they try to save money where they can too, they aren't even doing check ups over 75 age now so mam won't get hers done, we have to look after ourselfes xx

I think all this is due to Covid M, Not the Doctors, they are cutting down on everything, bloods etc. P had his appointment with kidney specialist cancelled twice, he’s got his appointment on Friday 🤞

in reply to Arymretep

Glad he's got it at last, I heard from the hospital after 2 years asking if I need my leg checking but the doctor already did it after a telephone appointment after my chemo cream a none malignant spot hadn't gone deep enough and cream cured it, I waited for follow up from hospital and rang doctors he checked it.

Yes, I’ve been waiting to go to ENT for three years ever since I had my hearing aids, I had a letter last week asking if I still wanted an appointment 😳 I said no thanks as I’ve gone privately since and had digital hearing aids as couldn’t cope with the NHS ones.

in reply to Arymretep

Yes I think going private is the way forward, mam did to get her heart checked but still had to wait as he was on Holliday 🙄

in reply to Arymretep

I'm.afraid of tablets I read the side effects and it's puts me off as you know I take lanzaprozil if have too but I'm ok if watch what I eat 🙄 nothing hard to digest ☹️

Arymretep profile image
Arymretep in reply to

A good tip is not to read the side effects or you’d never take any meds, even paracetamol have health warnings 😳. I take lanzopronol too only as needed, but they can cause osteoporosis so best not to take them long term.

in reply to Arymretep

I don't dare take them.either 😁🤦 if my head pains real bad I used to drink wine lol or cocodimol as paracetomol not strong enough 😟

Hello Twinklystar How did you cure your UC?

in reply to Blue_81

Hi I went on liquid diet but bit mash potato and fish cabbage juice chamomile tea as there healants I was bleeding and had ulcer tears not eating high fibre foods or anything other than easy to digest foods helped heel it, I read it can be a one off, I read the Gillian mckeith book she has chrones, the guy who did my colonoscopy said extra mature chedder cheese can cause it as it's the bad bacteria and the body attacks itself I had been eating a lot of it, I also think as I had the start of a stomach ulcer the acid from that contributed, also I was told stress can but I've had more stress since then so that wasn't the cause, I also stopped drinking alcohol for 3 month's and sugar I read is bad for the gut bacteria, have you this condition
