Came home to find dead fish

This is mostly just a vent because this just happened and my anxiety is skyhigh. For a little background, i live in a college dorm with a roomate and we went home for Thanksgiving break on the 19th and i got back yesterday. My roomate got a fish around a month ago and he’s been living in our dorm even though he’s not supposed to. She’s gone a lot so i end up having to feed him though i don’t mind because he’s cute and it looks like he’s looking at you when you talk to him.

Well, over the break i assumed she took him home with her because we have room inspections and we’re not allowed to have him and its a long time and fishes need to be fed. She’s not back yet but she texted me today and asked to check on him because she apparently left him in the closet for the entire break. I just checked the closet and he’s not moving and is most definitely dead. If i knew she wasn’t taking him home i would have taken him home with me or at least tried to.

I feel like if i had known he was in there i could have checked last night or tried to take him on the bus home or something i feel like its all my fault. I figure she doesn’t care about him because he’s just a fish and shes rarely here anyway, but coming back from break to find a fish that i had grown an attachment to’s dead body in a tank in the closet threw me into a panic attack. I feel awful thinking that he either starved or froze to death in the dark all alone. I know i’m probably overreacting but i just feel awful and i have no clue how to even tell her that he’s dead.

Hi there it sounds like your roommate is selfish it doesn't sound like she cared for the poor fish! Don't worry about telling her the fish is dead it her fault lay down a few groung rules that there are no more fish as you are not prepared to look after when she goes away and dont feel guilty it's her fault take care david

You are a very kind person to feel badly for the fish and it is to your credit. Your roommate has acted in a selfish and cruel way with no thought for a living animal.
