I just turned 60 uugh.i have been affected badly with panic attacks/anger/depression for 24 years.after 7 years of weekly therapy my doctor said he had taken me as far as he could and that he would no longer be of service to me.i didnt go back into the mental health scene until 2011.i talk with my psychiatrist for 30 minutes every 2-3 months by phone and i order all my meds on my own usually with a large company i wont mention.i started talking with a low key therapist but i dont know if he is the guy to help me/i gave my mental problems over to christ a month ago and im have alot more low anxiety days which is cool.im not a bible thumper so i try to stay low key,im not excited like a woman friend i have that is always UP AND HAPPY.....i just dont feel that way and i wonder if i will back slide in the future.thats all 4 now/good luck to you.

Welcome drummerboy1 to this amazing forum. What you have learned throughthe years is now enough to carry you through on your own.

It's true that a doctor or therapist can only go so far and than it is left up to you.

It is not a defeat but a continuation of your life experiences.

No one can make you well unless you take the action in going forward.

There is no magic wand or magic pill. You possess the "key" to healing.

Believe in yourself and the power of your mind.

You are stronger than you think.

Therapists guide you to the right path. Medication breaks that cycle and allows

you to continue forward. In the end, it's you and only you that controls your

mental health issues. I'm glad you are here with us new friend :) xx

drummerboy1, I had Agoraphobia for 5 years. Never left my house.I used that time to find everything I could on mental health and Anxiety.

For me, understanding the reasons behind my total fear of everything

helped me to move ahead. I used Dr. Claire Weekes' theory on Acceptance

as a way to break through Anxiety and it's "what if's"

It wasn't easy and takes time to retrain your mind. Ridding yourself of

negative thoughts, replacing these with positivity was certainly the way

for me to go. My life is now more calm and peaceful. I wish that for you

as well :) xx

I can relate to your struggles. I have suffered with severe anxiety & depression since I was a teenager. (I'm a retired RN).I started studying the Bible 30 years ago but didn't begin to find some deliverance until I got away from religion. Religious people didn't understand my struggles and were harsh & judgemental. I recently came to understand how loving & patient God is. I listen to His still small voice and He encourages & guides me. Every hour I have to confront the lies that accuse me, limit me and frighten me. It has been a slow process but I am finding some freedom. Remember God is love and He is not the cause of your suffering. Forgive everyone especially yourself. I will pray for you!🙏😍

Welcome to the group! I use my rosary to pray and distract myself. I also use chrism oil on the beads and let the smell be grounding. Whatever you can draw help and healing from is what is important. Also anxiety and depression are like your picture and like the tide it ebbs and flows. Sometimes even my happiest times I have panic. I’m in my 50s and still trying to get it right! What’s important is continued steps at self improvement and awareness. Warm Wishes!

You mentioned being afraid of backsliding. I wonder if therapy that teaches you how to be resilient. This was a game changer for me. You learn skills to take care of yourself when you hit a low point or how to react to emotions or thought that are natural but don’t serve you. A couple of practices to look at are CBT and brenè brown trained therapists.

I am 69 and dealing with OCD and occasional depression episodes. For me finding things to do that interest me have helped. My faith and worship of God, which used to be a big part of my life has taken some severe hits in my local church, with a scandal and a division over politics, so I hope you can find a church that will be a support and not a hindrance. Thanks for your post.
