Has anyone felt as if old methods would work better?

I feel as if I were to just ignore my panic attacks or try to think of something else even fighting it or ignore it, Would work better than the methods of accepting it and ride through it.

I know it sounds dumb. It’s just a thought.

I felt like I had been doing that my whole life acknowledged I had panic but then ignore it and would go away and go on and live my happy life. Until I actually accepted them and felt like they became worse and more frequent.

I think we have to use the method that helps us the most, alfreddy7. If your previous method of dealing with your attacks worked, then by all means, continue on. Just because a treatment or approach is new, doesn't mean it is better or will help us more. We all cope and progress in our own way.

This is my opinion, as humble as ever. I find that the current accept and ride through approach works best for me. Also, it did take an extremely long time to implement all that I have learned, staying the course and keeping my focus was a force to reckon with, indeed.

No thought is ever dumb, by the way. I appreciate your question and like that it made me think and reply. This is talk therapy, it helps. Thanks. 💗

It’s good to notice what works when. If it goes away when you stop thinking about it maybe come back later and ask what that was about. If it doesn’t go away try to figure out what is different. Basically pause at some point and ask. A journal might help.

You may be into something. Imagine if a brilliant doctor were to stand next to you and say, “Nothing is off the table. Everything is a possible cause of the panic attacks. Everything is a possible cure to the panic attacks.” With very open eyes, we might be able to detect some patterns that we never noticed before. For example, everyone laughed at me when I said opening windows caused me panic attacks. I was overreacting, they said. Well, after years of suffering, I took myself seriously.

Turns out I had seasonal asthma and pollen streaming through the window tightened my chest. Nothing like legit asthma to spark anxiety. I treated my allergies, and stopped my anxiety. I also keep my windows shut on the really bad pollen days. Look at your own life with very open eyes, your own eyes, and without judgement from yourself or others, and you may start to see some interesting cures and clues.

I think an important key to this is the intensity of what you are experiencing. So both methods can be useful at different times. Generally for panic attacks I think distractions and/or medication etc are fine. Whatever works for you. The method of noticing and working though a feeling is better for less extreme situations as a starting point. So look for opportunities to use this method to experience low level discomfort and then work your way up overtime.

Both methods can help and you can alternately use each one depending on what the situation is or what works for you.

Panic and anxiety can be very intense. Work through it.

I think distracting yourself can be very effective. That’s different from fighting your panic.

Hey I still answer you. I’m going through some panic attacks myself so I might not be able to reply fast. But I’m here for you.

I wasn't able to answer you because I was really struggling and it took awhile to stabilize.

Please hold on and use self talk because it will help.
