For quite a while I have been planning to design and illustrate this colouring book. The germ of the idea began when I used to take the little boy next door on nature walks by the estuary near our home to spot wading, field or woodland birds. I used to illustrate worksheets for him to spot the birds from, answer questions and colour or draw things himself. There was always a little prize for doing it. He absolutely loved completing these as well as going on the walks and at the time developed a real interest. He is now 12 and only interested in playing games online these days. However I am hoping the seed will remain and he will have an interest in and love of wildlife which he can perhaps eventually pass on to his own children.
This bird is the lapwing, a beautiful bird which holds a very special place in my heart. It is at home in the ploughed field as well as the mudflats of the estuary. It seems to epitomise my little weather boarded, black and white cottage, which sits between the estuary on one side of the peninsular and the wide open fields and woodland which stretch down to sandy beaches and the sea a few miles away on the other.
We often see these beautiful birds and hear them make their distinctive cry as they wheel about in the sky, on rather large butterfly like wings, while trying to attract a mate in summer.

Good to hear, my friend, good to hear! I am doing well, thanks for asking!
Lovely, Kkim! It's wonderful to hear what you did for that little boy. Although he is now busy with his games, I don't think he'll forget his adventures with you.Did you draw this? It's lovely!
My husband and I would often walk through the nearby Wildlife sanctuary when we lived back home. It was many acres of woods, winding paths and bridges and was very beautiful.
Hi Minnie, great to hear from you. Yes, it is my first illustration and one of my favourite UK birds. Thanks alot, it is the first time any of my illustrations have been exposed to public scrutiny so it is great to have a positive comment about it.Your Wildlife sanctuary back home sounds beautiful, I expect you miss it.
I miss it very much. It had a wooden cabin in the middle that housed the administration. There was a porch swing there that my husband and I loved to just sit on and enjoy the goings-on around us!
You might be interested in a Norwegian tradition that they have here involving birds and winter. You tie a wheat bundle outside your house for the birds to come enjoy. I'm going shopping for ours today and will tie it out front. I hate to post a picture of it on here after making my "community direction" post, but I think you'd really enjoy it and I don't know how else to tell you about it. My messages are finnicky at the moment; I get some and not others (and vice versa)
The nature reserve really does sound beautiful. It is great to hear about the tradition in Norway to tie a wheat bunch up for the birds to feed on in winter.Kim
Here is a Google image of a wheat bundle. Apparently this is a Christmas tradition only (no wonder none of the shops had one when I looked...). This is for the birds to come feed on during winter when it's cold and they have a hard time finding food.
