Can depression make you apathetic? Does that make me heartless?
Apathy: Can depression make you... - Anxiety and Depre...
Apathy
No it cannot ever make you heartless. Apathy is basically no motivation or feeling to do much at all for yourself., you are not heartless or you would not be on this site. 😊
Depression can cause us to lose interest in even the most basic things and can keep us from engaging socially with family and friends and to even taking care of ourselves. It’s not you, it’s the disorder.
You are far from heartless, you care for example you are feeling gratitude as you thank others for their support here as I’ve seen on your other threads.
Nope currently
Depression can definitely alter your perception towards everything. It can make you feel disconnected with the world around you. It can leave you in a state where you can only feel how miserable you are. Its doesn't mean your heartless. You can just become disconnected from your heart because you have no energy to put into it. It doesnt make you a bad person, it just means your a sick person who needs help to make that reconnection with your heart and the world around you.
Can i ever reconnect?
I can only speak from my experience but I've dealt with major depression and I've been able to reconnect with the help of medication( hopefully ill be able to live without it someday). I've never really met anyone who was more depressed than I was so I think it's possible for you. It did take me 20 long years to get better though. It was a dark dark road.
I hope it doesn't take me as long, im sorry you went through it that long
I hope so too. Hope was very important for me. It helped me to keep going. I was a pretty happy child(also very angry and emotional though) and I always held on to those memories and they gave me hope that I could feel well again.
Im currently on citalopram (probably not spelt right)
I'm on sertraline. If I could go back in time and tell myself some things, I would probably say to not assume my depression is just hereditary or not caused by something outside myself. I've read a lot about celiac disease and how its main symptom can be depression. I definitely wish I looked for diseases than cause depression instead of just assuming something was wrong with me from the start. Theres diseases that can make your neurotransmitters fall out of balance and if you heal the disease you can heal your depression. That ,"think positive" advice like that never did anything for me. In fact it was an insult to my struggle. Oh I just have to think positive, like I never thought of that.
I've also have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and depression and lethargy is one of the main symptoms. 80% of celiacs have hypothyroidism. I have not been diagnosed celiac yet because its difficult to diagnose and my doctor messed up my test but I'm treating myself as if I had it anyway because I've dealt with so many of the symptoms.
Yes you can. Apathy comes and goes with our highs and lows
