Looking for help for family member

My uncle is suffering from severe depression. He is from Ireland and has been here for about two years working on a visa. He was on medication back at home and it worked perfectly for him. But when he came here to the USA, he had no health insurance. So he’s not had any access to medication and now his depression is bad. I have contacted certain psychiatrists and they’re all wanting like five and 600 bucks for the first two visits before they could even decide to prescribe him medication. Is there any other options that anybody knows of that we can get access to depression medication for somebody who is not insured and not making a lot of money.

In the USA every town/city has a free mental health clinic. It’s hard to find sometimes. Look up your towns webpage. If they don’t have one go to the county or state. The therapist will be on a sliding scale and the meds are usually super cheap. Also there is Catholic Charities. It’s separate from the church and you don’t have to be Catholic.

Went to the “free clinic” in San Mateo. They saw him but wouldn’t prescribe him medication without insurance as they said he needed insurance so he could set up follow up visits. Even the nurse said she couldn’t believe it. Someone goes asking for help and they basically send him away.

Someone doesn’t know what they’re doing. I do peer counseling online for ours and I helped set Virginia up with its government funding along with other providers. Thousands of people even with insurance pay for things outside of insurance. Plus there’s GoodRx. Insurance has no place in it. Someone is confused. Many people go outside the insurance system. This makes me angry. You are free to report them or you may send names and numbers to me if you so choose. Out of pocket can mean zero cost to patient. They are messed up.

He wouldn’t mind paying out of pocket for the medication. He can get generic versions and they’re affordable. But the main objective was to get a dr to prescribe him the same medication that he was on before which absolutely leveled him out
