I have been to a few counselors but was not very helpful. Any tips on how to find the right one for me in my area?

It's difficult to say as you don't say what country or area you are in. Here in the UK there are counselling organisations who have a list of therapists. I read the profiles and then chose a couple to "try out". It's trial and error. The most important thing I would say is that you feel a "rapport" with your therapist and find the experience helpful although that could take around 4 or 5 sessions to establish I would say. I got my recommendation from a church friend, actually was attending buddhist church at the time, but the people I met there had similar values and were able to point me to a good one.
