Does anyone have any tips on how to get rid of tension migraines? I don’t want to rely on medication so I’m looking for some alternatives.

migraines vary....mine are cluster migraines and there is no cure....I just have to take advil and hope for the best. I went through thousands of dollars of medicines to try and help...nothing worked. Gingerale helps with the nausea as ginger root does. However that was years ago, and if I were you I would just do your homework on line as I have heard of new meds that are helping....

Hey fauxartist.... one of the most effective treatments for cluster headaches is breathing pure oxygen when the headache starts to come on. Have you tried that? I can see how this would be expensive if you are in US/don't have insurance. This affects men more often than women so I wouldn't be surprised if they misdiagnosed you! What do you think?

no....I haven't but it's an Intriguing prospect....if I get some extra cash sometime I will try that out. I never had migraines my whole life till I hit menopause, then exactly as my mother did before me.....bamb!...I got debilitating cluster migraines that would last over a week. I laid in the dark sicker than a dog....nauseous and couldn't raise my head I was in so much pain. I have always been very healthy until menopause....now I have been declining in health.

Acupuncture! It's great for stress too since u fall asleep for the hour u r there. I even found a place that has a sliding fee scale (google acupunture community clinic). Sorry u suffer from these. Not just the actual pain but also the anticipation which is strssful/depressing too. Therapists also recommend progressive relaxation techniques and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). This is definitely something I relate too way too well. Hoping these give relief!

come to think of it....yeah....I met this gal who was working at a pharmacy...and she had this little bar put into the top of her ear....she said she suffered from migraines all her life and has never had one since.....thanks for reminding me....I'll have to follow up on that. I'm a coward but it would be worth it.

Is it a piercing?

yeah....it's a supper tiny little silver bar into the top inner structure cartilage of the ear....and it's permanent, you don't take it in our out, just naturally clean it of course. If I find the paper she gave me on it, I'll post it to you if you like.

I have the piercing. It’s not for migraines. Some people say that it is but it’s actually a pressure point for intestinal upset.

what ever this gals was she said it stopped her migraines that she has had since age 7.....that's pretty dramatic.....I would imagine there are different ones or different issues.

Have you tried magnesium? When I was reading up on magnesium for anxiety I read that it can be effective for migraines. It said magnesium oxide but be careful on dosage. I'm not sure if that's one of types that can be a laxative.

Magnesium supplements, along with regular chiropractic adjustments and massages, helps a lot for me. It's pricey but worth it if you are really suffering. I also suggest an acupressure mat, which you can get on Amazon for like $20 with a pad for your back and a pillow. They also make "migraine hats" that are like a headband/ice pack combo for your head. Finding the source of migraines is also important, I did an elimination diet and then slowly added foods back in, and discovered there are a TON of foods that give me migraines. Nitrates from processed meats, cashews (but not other nuts?) and gluten are all migraine-inducing for me.
