Did any of you try one of these self-help books on social anxiety?

I mean a real book written by professional therapists and psychologists, not some kind of hocus pocus "be yourself" kind of sh...

I'm not so keen on giving some mental or social issues the status of disorders or illnesses... And even if I know that social anxiety can be very disabling I prefer to consider it a difficulty rather than a disorder.

This said, I don't like to consider myself as suffering from the so-called social anxiety disorder, but I do feel anxious at social situations in a way that is affecting negatively my life in many ways and I'd like to change that. So I walked into this one book, of the kind I explained above, and I wondered whether it would be a good idea to give it a try.

So I'd love to hear your experiences on self-help books of this kind. Did any of you work on any of those books? Did it help? How?

Thanks a lot in advance.

I didn’t have social anxiety but I did have panic disorder and agoraphobia. I have provided a link to the book that helped me the most. Best of luck in your recovery.

I went through my old box of self help books and I found another one that was even better than the first one I recommended.

David burns has a lot of good self help books and books on anxiety some people actually overcame anxiety with one of his books called “when panic attacks” it’s a wonderful book I haven’t finished it yet because I’m a slow reader lol but another one was what to do when you worry too much it’s a great book for adults and children it’s more on the children’s side but they give great tips in the book and I really would recommend it, it also helped me recover from my anxiety and it’s about not giving into your thoughts and worries

Hi,

I found an excellent book that I highly recommend. I’ve seen people on this site recommending it. Hope & Help with your Nerves by Dr. Clair Weeks

Hi,

I would have to agree with Madison10. Hope and Help for Your Nerves is a fantastic one. I've recently finished reading it. It did help me understand my intrusive thoughts and why I get them. Almost felt like she was talking to me specifically. Acceptance isn't easy, but it's something to work on, for me anyway.

Take Care
