Dealing with depression related to grief

I’m a first year uni student and I lost my really good friend to cancer the Friday before I moved into residence. Lately I’ve been experiencing a lot of depression almost every day for the last two months. I break down and I lash out at people that I know care about me. If anybody has any advice about controlling your emotions or dealing with a heavy loss, please let me know.

Joining this support group is a great first step! I wanted to say that I am so sorry for your loss. Grief is a terrible thing to go through. Have you thought about seeing a therapist or counselor? Most colleges and universities have these services. There is absolutely no shame in using them. It's a good place to let out your thoughts and emotions in a safe environment. :)

Thanks for your response! It’s been a pretty rough year to say the least. I tried to go to the counselor at my school. She kinda just said that I’m doing everything right and to keep on going and she didn’t say anything about making another appointment so it was kinda weird. I’m not really sure what to do

that does seem a little strange to me. My counselor has an appointment with me every other week even if things are going well for me, its just the act of going that is helpful sometimes. Could you try seeking out a different one, maybe one off campus? some insurance companies cover the cost of these services!

I’ll look into it. Thank you! Hopefully there’s one I can walk to :)

I am sorry about the loss of your friend. Losing a loved one is never easy. Please do seek a place where you feel it is helping you.

I am sorry for your loss.

I know this is not a good suggestion, but I would say that one must not get carried away by emotions.

Yes, lashing out at others, is a normal reaction, but think about those who have cared about you. Do they deserve such response?

Losing someone can bring unimaginable grief, but would that person want you to continue grieving?

Believe me, time heals everything, just be patient.

That’s really true. I try not to but I let my emotions control me sometimes. The people in my life don’t deserve that-I just get too caught up in my own head. Thank you so much for your words
