Anxiety seems to come and go

Hi,

Have you had issues with anxiety just creeping up on you when you dont expect it? I try to manage it at times, but them sometimes it still so strong and I overthink the sensations. I try to find distractions, but unfortunately I sometimes just need to take a pill. I sometimes feel like I have this figured out and then sometimes I feel like I am at step 1. Does anyone else feel that way? Its hard to stay focused when you relapse into anxiety episodes. They do pass for me, but while I am in them I feel down and anti-social.

Speaking for myself, I find that anxiety can only be controlled, not eliminated. The strength of the anxiety varies over time, and occasionally it gets high enough that I have to resort to some Ativan to bring things back into balance. I'd love to put it behind me permanently, but that's just dreaming. Sometimes the illness gets the upper hand, and you're back to Step 1. It's nothing to be discouraged about. It's just a flare-up of a lifelong condition. That's how I see it.

I agree. I take xanax for "flare-ups" but then I feel bad for needing the drug. Sometimes for a day or two.. sometimes on and off again for a few weeks. I think the secret is to keep control of the body sensations and thoughts. Also to eat right and exercise. Stress plays a big role in the anxiety. I know its life long and sometimes it just feels awful, but sometimes it is well managed or almost non existent. Overthinking it is my worst enemy!

You might consider the book "Hope and Help for Your Nerves" by Claire Weekes. She wrote a few other similar books on dealing with anxiety. I read one many years ago and it was very helpful.

That happens - it feels like it comes out of nowhere sometimes. I know it might be difficult, but sometimes I try calming affirmations like reminding myself that everything is okay, I’m not in danger, the feeling will pass.

Meditation is also helpful- there’s a few apps but Headspace is my favourite .

Know that you aren’t alone! Hope you feel better soon
