Concerned about my girlfriend's memory loss(please read)

She is 25 and works as a secretary for a doctor's office. Lately she has been super duper stressed and she calls me everyday(and sometimes crying) telling me about all her stresses about her boss. Its all her boss that is causing the stress. Everyday she wakes up she has no motivation. She is also in a very tight situation financially and has been for most of her life but even with all the debts she needs to pay off she is insisting she will quit this job. And she has never done something like this before. She was always a motivated and hard worker at any job but in this job her boss is so bad that she is starting to lose herself and starting to become a different person. Thats how stressed she is.

Anyway that is the background and I am wondering if extreme stress can cause memory loss like this? Other accompanying symptoms include stuttering and weird accent to her words. She was telling me how scared she was of herself with all these things she is forgetting. If not, would you suggest going straight to a neurologist? I am asking because since she does not have a lot of money, I don't want her to make unnecessary visits to irrelevant doctors and all these tests they can make her do. So I'd like to know what the best thing to do right now for this situation.

If she's not sleeping that can cause a lot of issues but otherwise if symptoms have been going on awhile and she's never had the issue before then seeing a specialist may be what you'd want to do. I get the money issue etc but if she has insurance they can cover a lot of it and if not most hospitals have charity causes to help those of low income. In the end it's her life and up to her if she will or won't see someone.

Thanks. Symptoms started last week I think. She is sleeping but I think oversleeping because of her stress. Ok but straight to a neurologist?

Hi Heruga, definitely take her to a Neurologist something is going on more than depression. Stay strong, she needs your support right now but know that we will help you through this. Good Luck and let us know when she gets that appointment. Take it easy x

Thanks agora. Should we wait a little longer and monitor her condition for a while to see if it goes away or not or should she go to the doctor asap? And you don't think extreme stress can cause this?

You know Heruga, extreme stress can cause a number of symptoms not normally associated with anxiety. Depression is but another issue that is affected by the overload of stress she is experiencing. It's a hard call in that it falls between a neurological or psychiatric issue. Because of money being an issue, if you wanted to monitor her for a little while longer, I trust that you would watch her closely for any sudden increase in her mannerisms. If it came to that you could take her to the ER where they would do a complete evaluation.

Hang in there Heruga, it will all work out.

When going in if having no insurance, ask can you apply as INDEGENT.. It is a term used or one I am familiar with for low income or no income. If you are going with insurance, ask the clinic or hospital with which comoany they are CONTRACTED with because otherwise, you'll end up with an out of pocket bill. All because you asked "Do you take (whatever company named) insuramce." Not all places take insurance in question. God's blessings to you.

I think I would start with a visit to a general practitioner. There are SO many things that can cause these symptoms, INCLUDING an amoeba infection, which is not super common, but can be a bear to diagnose.

I'm a great diagnostitian where internal combustion engines, evap systems, fuel injection systems, computer operating systems, professional sound reinforcement and public address audio systems, lighting systems, chain motors and a lot of other junk is concerned, and trust me, someone that can say, "I don't know," is a LOT less harmful than someone that can not say those words. This is no different.

Absolutely, let the professionals be the professionals on this one. "Could have should have would have" is bad enough when you kill expensive equipment, but when it's a loved one, mistakes can lead to out and out remorse.

I sure hope It's nothing serious, and maybe that's the case, but I don't advise trying to win a hockey game using tennis players armed with football bats and wearing Beefeater uniforms.

My prayers are with you. Please get her to a licensed doctor.

Poor thing. Sounds so horrible for her.

I would actually recommend you take her to a doctor ASAP. It sounds at little like she may have the effects of having had a very minor stroke. All that stress would increase her blood pressure which leads to other things. Either way, she is in dire need of being examined by a doctor. Best of luck to the both of you.
