Hello All

I have been suffering with an eating disorder for sometime, i was told last week that i had lost another 3kg and if it continued i would potentially be hospitalised if my BMI dropped too low. Does anyone know the BMI before you get hospitalised.

Many Thanks

G

It very much depends on where in the UK you are. I know where I am they are moving away from Bmi being the main criteria for hospital admissions so even if your weight is 'higher' than what would previously be an admission level, they now consider blood results, blood pressure, rate of decline etc. Everyone is different. xx

Hi Gor123

Like gymmonster said the NHS is trying a more well rounded approach in some areas as people with higher BMI’s can sometimes be in a much sharper rate of decline than those with a lower BMI who are simply maintaining the same low weight. I know that anything below 13 and you would 100% be sent to hospital, before I recovered they wanted to put me in inpatient on a bmi of 15.4 but because I had my Mum supporting me at home i avoided being admitted. Inpatient can really work for some people but it’s not always a good experience for others, if you can recover using the outpatient service then you’ll probably find this is a softer approach. Do you have anyone who could support you and maybe help you recover at home? x xx

Depends on GP, hospital and your weight history - and we are all so different - but you need to consider not losing any more - or even gaining some more - and not to let the bmi influence your decision re losing more weight - so if you can get some counselling now - go for it - as you need to look at the reasons behind the ED and your mindset - ABC have a good helpline so you could also ring that.
