Improved my bone density!

I want to share that I went in for my Dexa to check on my osteopriosis. last scan was -2.9 in spine

and other areas were slighly better. This time my spine was -2.4! I can't believe it! I was so sure it had gotten worse as the last scan i got was worse then the one before. I was really considering getting on reclast if it was worse again. I think I am going to hold off for now. So now Im reflecting on what i have been doing that might have helped.

I do walk a couple miles everyday, I lift light weights 3 times a week, I eat 5 prunes every morning with raw almonds, I eat canned salmon with bones (salmon cakes) once a week , I take alive calcium,

I get 5000 iu od D3 a day, magnesium, b vitimans and coq10. The one new thing i have been doing is eating dr johns hard candies which have xylitol in them. I just read in Finland they descovered it helps with bone loss by helping you to absorb your calcium.

Im not sure what things worked but im going to continue on my path and hopefully things keep going in the right direction.

hi there…congrats for all your efforts..when you say alive calcium is what you take..is that a brand name..ALIVE? How did you find your info on prunes and almonds and the candy…seems like a wide range of info…also has reclast caused side effects? The docs would credit the meds…I bet..but how long have you been on them…? Thanks for more info!

HI, Yes Alive brand calcium. Im dairy free so I try and get my calcium from veggies but it isnt enough. I found info on prunes here on this site and then started reading about the bennifits. I decided to give it a try. The almonds are just a good choice with the prunes because they also have calcium and protien. The xilitol thing i just discovered from reading a study done in Finland. I am not on any medication for Osteopriosis. I was going to start this spring if my numbers were worse. Im not sure what has helped me to be honest. But I am going to continue what im doing. Everyone is so different. But i have other health conditions and Ive learned to attack it from all sides. Its never just one thing your doing but a combination of good things that make a difference.

Thank you so much for sharing what works! I am newly diagnosed with osteoporosis and was looking for natural remedies with positive results. Just ordered Alive Calcium!

Congratulations!!!

So wonderful!

Please tell us what you have done differently since your last -2.9 dexa? Did you go off of the algaecal plus and strontium boost? Were you walking the 2 miles per day for several years?

Do you take a b complex ? If so which one and long have you been having the dr John’s? What size weights do you do ? Sounds all very awesome!

Yes, those are really great questions that I would like to read the answers for.

So i quit taking Algae cal because i wasnt getting the results I was hoping for. And it was really expensive. I take Alive bone support with D3, k2 and magnesium. But I add a little more D and magnesium. I have MS so D is important for me and I keep it in the 60 range,

I use Thorne B complex#6. Yes I walk 2 miles almost everyday for at least 5 years now.

I know they say to use heavy weights but my back can't handle it so Iam using 3 lb weights.

The candies I started eating in december as I bought them for my diabetic daughter. I fell in love with them. so I have a couple a day. They do have another sugar alchohal which im not a fan of but as long as i dont over do it I think it is ok. Im not sure what things are helping. but i feel really good about my dexa. I am looking forward to my endo appointment. Im sure he will still push the medication but Im going to hold off for now.

That's great news! Prunes contain boron, so that's why they're working. Dr. Kevin McCormick recommends boron in his book The Whole Body Approach to Osteoporosis (which I bought as an E-book). It was published in 2009, so I'm going to buy his latest book Good Bones (as a real book this time).

Can u please post u r recipe for salmon cakes?

Revel profile image
Revel in reply to Sudie1208

Hi, I never use reciepes but I will share how i make them. :) this is for 2 cans of salmon it makes 6 cakes. we eat three each with a green salad.

I chop up very small pieces of onion, garlic, ginger, celery, carrot maybe a little sweet red pepper, a little hot pepper if you like some spice. salt pepper saute this in a pan with olive oil. The amount of this mixture isn't too much maybe 1/2 to 3/4 cup.

I mix it with the salmon in a bowl and add 1 egg, a little mayo and a little mustard, squeeze some lemon in there mix it in.

then i use a paleo breading (you can use any fine bread crumbs) Im gluten free. use enough bread crumbs to hold it together to make patties.

I bake mine at 375 on non stick pan for about 15 min (i think) you can pan fry them too .

I make a garlic aoili out of avocado mayo, olive oil and minced garlic. SO Yummy!

Well done! We really need to have a little section somewhere in the forum community for people who manage to turn bone results around without medication to give heart to those who are trying to make up their minds. The bone meds really shouldn't be the first thing that crosses a doctor's mind, should it? Although I know there are times when they're needed.

Both magnesium and Vitamin K2 are really important for enabling calcium to migrate to the bones where we want it. :)

how long have you been eating the candies and prunes and how many almonds ? I am excited you made progress. What time if day do you walk? The vitamin D from the sun is supposed to help

Hi, I have been eating the prunes about a year. These candies just sinse xmas. I eat about 1/4 cup of almonds in the morning along with an almond flour tortilla cinnamon and an OWYN protien drink. I walk in the morning but have to wear sunscreen because i get many basal carcinoma cancers which i have to get cut out.(not fun). So im not getting d from sun! When i got my dexa I also got blood work which showed my D was too high! 90! I usually am around 65. I have always taking 5000 iu a day for 12 years and never went that high. so Im absorbing more d for some reason. My Alive calcium has 4000iu D in 4 tablets of 1300 calcium. Im now trying to figure out how to stay on this calcium and lower my d. But i wonder is it the high d which helped me? Dr. says no. So i will try to lower it by getting more calicum from food but im dairy free.:( I also use a green powder from" Dr Cowens garden" it is kale and collard and i use pomagranit powder in my smoothies with flax milk. Maybe that is helping. I really don't know for sure what has helped the most. But i am afraid of changing anything. :)

That is outstanding and inspiring! Why prunes? I haven't read anything about that ... new to the game and overwhelmed, so appreciating insights!

To be honest I read about prunes on line on some blog. I researched it and because of the vitiman K in the Prunes help support protiens that build bones and potasium to help prevent calcium loss. I really think it is a combination of many things that has helped me not just one thing. I also attack my MS this way. I attack it from all directions. If i learn that something is good for bones i add it to my diet. (after researching of course).

During my life, I battled a brain tumor and breast cancer as well as melanomas - I have always done what you do - research as much as possible to extract data that may provide meaningful results. I'm adding prunes (enjoy almonds already - it is good protein and a great snack for post workout). Collard greens, kale, spinach- good. I was macrobiotic for a long time after the brain tumor. Foods in the nightshade family are believed to deplete bones of minerals. I typically avoid them. Likewise, consuming whole grains, legumes, nuts and soy products bind the calcium of other foods when consumed at the same sitting. When bound, the body cannot use it. In that same vein, kombu and hijiki seaweeds contain the highest calcium content of all seaweeds. More than 10x found in milk.

Thank you for sharing your time to help educate and share the battle. You and others on this forum are so very generous with your time and learning experiences - so very appreciated!

Do you find the Xylitol Gives you diarrhea? If not, I may add the hard candies.

It doesn't bother me. I only have 1 or 2 a day. Serving size is 4. But they do have fiber! You should read the nutrition lable and see if you think it is right for you. I love to grab one right before my walk. It gives me motivation. :)
