has anyone been on Forteo for two years and then not taken anything else afterwards? I am interested in knowing if they experienced bone loss after Forteo with no additional meds I do not want to take any more medication but I am told I will lose any gains if I don’t

hello—I wanted to be on forteo too but was told I’d have to go on bisphosfonates after 2 years—I’ve found nothing that isnt harmful—It’s the pits!

I struggled with taking Forteo, But my bone scan was so bad my spine was -5.3 and hip -2.6. So after two years of the forteo, I had a 22% increase in my spine (-4.2) and 7% increase in my hip, The hip went into osteopenia. But now I am told that if I do not take something else I will lose all the gains, and my spine is still not good. They want me to go on Prolia, or at the very least biphosphonate. It is such a dilemma. What to do, what to do. Mentally, if you don’t do anything you live, with the fear of just moving the wrong way and fracturing a bone. I am tempted to just bite the bullet and take Prolia anything is a scary prospect I pray that the Lord will give me guidance.

yes—I agree it’s really a horrible dilemma—there are some here who advocate weight bearing exercises, vitamin D, Calcium, and bone building foods…Some have changed their Dexa scores with that method—can you consult with any doctor—even an ND or functional med Doctor? I’m thinking of trying endocrinologist—someone who can think a little broader—I would love to sit in on Osteoporosis college training classes for Osteo docs—I’m sure there’s no alternative to pills training—-you know that after your second shot of prolia—you can’t get off it right? It looks like they didn’t tell you about fosamax ending in 2 years…which is not a good sign or good thing to have happened—( and for me I would look for another doc…but my assumption may not be correct) walking is good for weight bearing and some add a weight bearing vest—perhaps you can find a doc who will let you try options for 6 months or a year? I feel this doc is making you fearful about coughing etc—and I could be wrong on that too and don’t want to assume—perhaps another opinion or two would help especially if you can find a functional or good ND or endo doc—-I hope others will join in here—I’m so sorry for these difficulties we all face—but try to remain hopeful and strong—It’s especially important to work with someone you trust—and I know searching is difficult—try to pace yourself.

Have you considered a Reclast injection to keep the gains you’ve made on Forteo? Reclast is once a year injection, sometimes keeps working longer and you don’t have to worry about getting fractures after stopping it like Prolia. Try to find a good Endocrinologist associated with a teaching hospital, they are more knowledgeable. Good luck to you and your bone health!
