Hi Crawldad,

I am 55 and just took my 8th dose, no side effects thus far to speak of. Taken as directed is very important, however.

I opted for the meds as I already perform a good amount of exercise, eat well and sleep well. I incorporated some moderate strength and balance routines geared for osteo and did clean up my diet even more and added the calcium and D supplementation. I am hoping to just be able to hold steady as long as possible due to my age.

Already having a fracture and having your hips be in a fragile state, if I were you, I would not be able to start the medicine fast enough. Maybe you could incorporate the exercise, diet and supplements then check after 15 months your results. I am hoping to go off of it after completing 15 months. Can always pick it back up later. Fosamax gives you the flexibility to do that.

Good luck to you :)

thank you yes I stated risedronate yesterday and joined the YMCA. Because of kind people like you I weighed out med risk and fractures. Medicine won. It was months after compression fracture that I could really get around comfortably. Your young age hopefully in future you can break from medicine for a few years or more. Wishing you the best. Osteoporosis is no joke very disabling I know it changed my life. But with exercise, diet and now medicine hope I can avoid anymore fractures!!!!

If you haven't done so already, you may wish to have a physical therapist set up a program for you based on your diagnosis and fracture history. You don't want to harm yourself further and having a therapist help you with a work out routine will maximize your efforts. In addition, Falling, is what we want to avoid and I also suggest you learn everything about how to avoid falling as you age. Also, proper body mechanics and posture is critical for bone health and avoiding fractures. A physical therapist can advise you on this and proper exercises for it. We often harm our spine and bones by daily activities and you want to educate yourself on this. Best of luck with your outcome and the drugs. I have had osteoporosis for over 10 years and am 68. I do not take medications but know how scary and unsettling it is having this. Although my scores continue to decline I walk 7 days a week, do weight training 3 x per week, do balance and posture routines, eat well, take bone loving vitamins. So far, no fractures but I hope drug companies will research other options with drugs that have less side effects. I don't have much hope for that in my lifetime, as the profits on the current drugs are quite high. Good luck and remain positive.

wow No

Big Pharma not interested in med with less side effects. Just stopped risedronate delayed release you take once a week 35 mg. Third week so so sick found out med can cause GERD and irritation of esphogus won’t take med next week Also pet peeve lately never heard from doctor my description would tell him esphogus and GERD I actually got information from this group .of what could be going on. I felt sick day of taking med first two weeks. Third and now last week just got sicker and sicker. Cough scary and crackle sounds and short of breath also feel like you need to cough up phlegm but could not. Hope it heals on it’s own since big shot doc not calling. At this point I have no interested in talking to that physician. Let you know if it heals on its own.

I have a friend with osteoporosis who has been doing the infusions. (We've never discussed the medication specifics so I don't know which med.)

She's also 80 years old. She still travels, hikes, kayaks, etc.

As I look at my older yoga and tai chi students (70s, 80s, 90s), I have come to realize it's not about the disease. It's about their attitude toward life. Although they may not be able to do everything they did when younger, they still engage in the things they can do.
