Prolia

For those of you that have had success with Prolia, how much did your bone density increase and how long did it take. I'm still trying to decide whether to go on Prolia or not. But I'd like to know success stories, with some numbers or at least percentage of increase. Thanks to all!

Dear walkmax (and others on Prolia),

I consulted with my endocrinologist after a low bone density diagnose. Below is a brief summary of our conversation regarding Prolia.

Although Prolia is a very good medication, it has been known to cause fractures after people get off the medication ("we learned that the hard way", he said). That is why my doctor would only recommend it in the following cases:

- People with a high fracture risk (mine is only between 5 and 10% in five years).

- People after certain age (I'm only 51). He would not prescribe it to me because I would have to stay on it for life (to avoid the fracture risk of getting off the medication).

There is some information on the matter on the internet (it takes a little of web digging to find it though). I would recommend that you do some additional research and get a second opinion.

Hope this helps. My best wishes to you.

Thank you for your response. My question is, how do you know if you have a high fracture risk?

Your doctor should provide you with the information about your fracture risk. There is an algorithm professionals in this field use to calculate it. The result is a factor of your T score among others.

Here is a link to a website that provides additional information and leads you to an online calculator of your fracture risk that you can use (iofbonehealth.org/osteoporo.... However, I do recommend that you contact your doctor to obtain his/her perspective.

Considerably! So much so that I stopped. Big mistake as had a spinal fracture in the 4th month. My doctor never told me about the rebound effect of stopping. Guess she didn't know.
