Worried about Dad

Hello everyone, I am new to the group and need a bit of advice. My Dad is now 74 and takes statins due to a mild heart attack last year and had a stent put in. He asked me was there any vitamins he could take as his memory is starting to fail him. His older brother is also in a care home from last year due to dementia therefore my Dad is worried. I read on line vitamin D3 or Niacin can help but then again I would not tell him this until a chat to a proffesional. Is there any truth about vitamin D can slow down the process of memory loss?

Welcome to the community. Your question on vitamin D3 depends on a number of factors, including levels in the blood stream. Severe vitamin D3 deficiency can cause memory loss symptoms, so supplementation can be helpful in certain cases.

Your dad's doctor can order a 25-hydroxy vitamin D blood test, which will determine if supplementation is indicated.

One other supplement to ask his doctor about is CoQ10. Levels are reduced when taking statins. And, forms that are water and fat-soluble absorb better. As the PP mentioned, vitamin D is better dosed based on lab results and working with his doctor.

It might be useful to ask his GP to do a full blood screen FBC, U&E's TFT, LFT CRP and B12 and Folate ,25-hydroxy vitamin D as low levels can also cause memory issues and neuropathy!
