My AF... is anyone else's similar?

I know from my limited knowledge of AF that it seems everyone's AF is different, having said that, does anyone get this or heard of anyone with this...? mine seems to trigger when i excercise,

I'm on 2.5mg Bisoprolol daily..If i ride my bike all ok and in normal rhythm then I come to a hill where i have to work a little harder, once my HR hits around 120...I get the chest flutter and AF kicks in....it can last for about an hour or so then kicks back into normal rhythm, and can then be ok for the rest of the ride.

I know some people will say "stay below 120bpm"...and that's logical , but unrealistic when you have a hill to get over.

I don't seem to get AF in any other situations.

It's very frustrating, is anyone in a similar boat?

Cheers

Thanks for the reply John, but it's hard when its stopping you from carrying on doing what is a massive part of your life...There are a couple of professional cyclists recently sufferring arrythmias, and having had ablations, returned within 6 weeks to the very top end of the world stage, winning races.

google Elia Viviani to read his story.

Its all to easy to give up and say oh well...I intend to explore all avenues before i join the local crown green bowling club

It's worth making sacrifices, Simoni. I resigned from my job to reduce stress. I didn't want to die on behalf of the company. I'm sure you don't want to be a martyr to the yellow jersey?

You don't mention your age, which might be significant compared with competing athletes. I am coming up to 65, found that I could increase BPM to 120 for very short bursts during interval walking, and HR would decrease when standing still. I'm post ablation at present but hope to get back to that state. However, if my system tells me it doesn't like that I will adjust my exercise regimen to accommodate my heart. Pushing the boundaries isn't the only way of keeping fit and healthy. I don't mean this as a criticism but you will find other ways to get that satisfying feeling if you are open to it. My experience only of course. As it happens getting AF made me increase my exercise load with beneficial effect.

I can understand your frustration in that case. Maybe some others who are more sporty will chip in and help you.

AF during or after exertion is not unusual, however it manifests itself. AF is a changing condition and the short burst of AF after the hill might not stay that way. Expectation that it will give over after the hour might be a false positive. As my doctor said to me a long time ago after short episode due to bad medication "The heart could run away with itself". And you really don't want that...

I would personally advise caution. What starts as short bursts can soon escalate into more. I pushed things on my exercise bike last year and ended up back on medication and since then, 2 cardioversions and an ablation (with another 2 cardioversions) 3 weeks ago. Only my experience but knowing what I know now........

It may be a good idea to just mention it to a doctor/ cardiologist simoni. You’ve been lucky to identify excersize a trigger as some of us afibbers here find it really hard to identify our triggers and are in and out of episodes for no apparent reason which is sometimes very frustrating. if I were able to identify all my triggers then I would definitely steer well clear of them because the less you get afib then the better it is for you.?

I suggest you read The Haywire Heart - how too much exercise can kill you & follow drjohnm.org/

Only person I knew who died from AF ignored warnings above - don’t ignore advice above.

Said it before and I'll say it yet again. The number of cyclists in this group has now stopped surprising me. I include myself in that list.I'm now 72. Cycled hard and long for many years. Ran fast as often as I could. I understand the draw and the frustration. I still cycle. It has taken me some time to stop the chase when younger people pass me. I smile, that used to be me, and carry on. Always trying to keep.my heart within my chest. Hills, I used to speed up. I now stop and walk, look at the views that I used to never used to see. Smell the Heather, broom and the honeyed Gorse. Hear the birds watch for Hares and Other wildlife. Yes, I still go out walking, cycling and enjoy life. Keeping Afib at bay is now my passion not catching the cyclist who just overtook me.

Take care. Stay safe, live a long life if not in the slow lane, certainly avoid the fast.

Good advise. Im just on 79 after a lifetime of club cycling. I started getting af symptoms about 8 yrs ago but didnt really see it until i started serious training for the Worldmasters in 2017. Yes i did get a couple medals but af won the day. I now try to excercise for life fitness. I am on a waiting list for p and a.

Hi, I'm 66 and do hill climbing on my bike so I can say trip to the mountains to ski at altitude. After getting PAF I scaled back in intensity and time. 1 1/2 hrs max 2x a week. I put mountain bike gears on my road bike so I could slow down going uphill. I take the rhythm control drug Flecainide. It is way more effective for me than a rate reducer like you take. I haven't had an AF episode in a few years. Maybe discuss medications with your doc. I also carry a pill in the pocket just in case. PAF is progressive. Every PAF incident makes the next one easier to get into and harder to get out of until you are in permanent AF. Alblation often takes a very long recovery and may not be a permanent fix. Especially if you are no longer in your 20s. I really feel for you.

Yes, im the same or similar. Uneven heart beat all the time, then 3wks ago i woke up with an even pulse but excersise makes it speed up dramatically after 12 minutes then starts thumping around as it quickly starts heading for max heart rate. I to am a cyclist but for some time now have been using excercycle at our club gym. I also wake every morning around 4 to 5 with debilitating nausea.I was diagnosed with atypical flutter. I dont know what they will cal this new even beat version. I do get to sleep better with the even rythm.

I take rivaroxaban for anticoagulant and 30mg diltiazem as a pill in the pocket. Im excersise intolerant and donot tolerate drugs well.

Its my severely enlarged left atrium that is causing my grief.

Good to share notes
