Omega 3?

I was recommended omega 3 by my cardiologist. After the first capsule I received an arrhythmia and a decrease in heart rate and long breaks. I was scared and didn't take it! Has anyone had reactions to omega 3? We found this on Google: "The World Health Organization asked us to evaluate the health effects of polyunsaturated fats, and as part of this larger project, we evaluated the effects of omega-3 fats on the cardiovascular system," Hooper said. We were very excited about omega-3 fats in the early 1990s, after some surprising and positive studies. The results of further studies have never been so good, but in a way we have kept the idea that omega-3 fats are great for us, despite the disappointing results, "Hooper said. I would like omega-3 supplements to be an easy way to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, but no, so we need to focus on “Changes in the way that works - a healthy diet, moderate alcohol consumption , smoking cessation and maintaining an active life, "Hooper added." Clinicians need to be aware that if there is no specific need to reduce triglycerides, then there is no reason to encourage the use of omega-3 supplements. " said Lee Hooper, PhD, from the University of East Anglia, UK, a member of the World Health Organization's nutrition advisory group. "Patients should be advised to spend money to eat healthily or stay fit." , Hooper added..

Thinking has changed - it does all the time. I’m with Hooper.

This is where I am with all of this:-

I think there are benefits to taking Omega 3 supplements but depends upon what type and how you take them.

I doubt there is a connection with the onset of arrythmia after taking one dose but don’t take them if you feel uncomfortable as the anxiety it will cause is more likely to affect you in all sorts of negative ways.

If there was a direct connection then it’s more likely to be the fillers or if an oil, the composition of gel which may trigger an arrythmia - it won’t be the Omega 3 itself.

It’s not a good idea to take both Omega 3 Fish Oils with anticoagulants as they can increase the efficacy of some anticoagulants.

Fish oils are the best source of Omega 3 but they also contain other Omega’s which are not good, however, as always, a balanced diet will give you enough so if you eat oily fish once or twice a week you will have the equivalent of a supplement. Now that’s really easy for me as I live by the sea but I don’t know how easy that would be for you in Romania?

Another food rich in Omega 3 is Chia seeds so a teaspoon of organic Chia seeds is a good daily source.

As far as I can see, Omega 3 is more important for brain than for heart but as the WHO quotes, we’ve hung on to the idea and once imprinted on the brain, it’s really hard to shift position.

I really doubt that one capsule of omega 3 caused your arryhthmia and suggest coincidence but of course the mind is powerful.

I strongly believe that a good diet as suggested by Hooper and promoted here many times is the best for both general health and heart health in particular but as I said the mind is powerful and many people genuinely believe that supplements benefit them.

thanks for the messages! I also couldn't believe that from that 1 gram oily capsule I developed arrhythmia and bradycardia with breaks and after a few days I took another capsule and the symptoms reappeared. So without a doubt that the capsule caused something else, I didn't take it. because I have consumed fish oil in the bottle and I have not had side effects. I will not take it if it still doesn't help! Let's be healthy! better seeds as you suggested..

My Dr advised one 1200 mg EPA/ fish oil AM and another PM..........NOT together. I’m on Apaxiban. Bisoprolol. Also eat fish as I don’t eat anything with legs on.🤣

I had first onset of mine after those supplements. I choose real food now and not the capsules.

There are many types of omega 3 .... perhaps that type didn't suit you. I like Krill Oil, myself.

Did the doctor mention magnesium? Lots of arrhythmia patients take it. I took it when I had continuous ectopic heart beats ......... calmed them down to normal sinus. They never returned. Magnesium is calming and anti-arrhythmic.

and how much magnesium do you take, in what form, for ectopic and arrhythmia? thanks!.

I took 300 to 400mg twice a day of Swanson Vitamins online Triple Magnesium Formula. Took about a week to kick in, but resolved serious case of ectopics. Might not work for everyone, but worth a try. Swanson's ships internationally.

Magnesium causes a laxative effect when you've reached saturation level. Then ..... you just back off 50mg or so .... until it dissipates. That is your therapeutic dose. Of course, you might not get that laxative effect, either. I did not.
