Successful Ablation anniversary ❣️

Hi all,

Just wanting to check in to commemorate one year on from my ablation at St Thomas's on 10th July. If you are dithering I would so recommend it !! I was diagnosed with persistent AF at 53 and female, so for me no question, just wanted rid.

Since ablation I had 3 brief episodes at night, self medicated with low dose beta blockers N then 2 episodes this week funnily enough, for less than a minute both, which I hope is not a warning sign for its return, as odds of a rebound on one ablation in a year, I was told were 50/50. So I have beaten that !! ❣️ 90%, with 2-3 ablations.

Right now my BP is a bit high . I am peri menopausal n getting more symptoms from that so maybe that will play with my heart rhythm. And overall still working to get my previous fitness and best weight back.

Would appreciate any other similar stories ?

Yes well done you Bob. I plan to make it an anniversary every year. Let's hope I can reach your record, in another 10 years🌞

I can write a lot more later , had a bad night with AF ...

Best thing is you got a diagnosis & anticoagulated .

It’s only in recent years that female heart issues are taken more seriously & investigated .

Thx Alessa yes would be interested to hear more from your experience on that if you have time later, for women, for my I am late to go into menapause and have had intermittent anaemia past 6/7years re fibroids. Think this may have contributed to my onset. Very sorry to hear you had a bad night with AF.

Hope u feel better after some rest

I had my one and only ablation in St Thomas’ in Nov 2013. Over the years I have had an odd short bout (I think) but I consider myself AF free. I am on anticoagulants but no other meds. So keep fingers crossed as may just be a little warning -don’t go mad!!

Thanks v much Kally, v good to hear your success!! 7 years for you.

Do you mind if I ask what you think was the main cause or trigger for your AF ?

I couldn’t say I identified any triggers. I believe the cause may have been lifestyle - although I had stopped before the onset of AF I was a heavy smoker and very fond of a bit too much alcohol. Reformed (ish) character!!

I had a double ablation for afib and flutter at St Thomas's 4 years ago, It significantly reduced both. Still get the odd 'turn' occasionally...... usually there's a trigger such as dehydration or over-stressed/tiredness. However it is absolutely manageable and life is so much better without the ghastly sleepless nights and long scary runs of fast irregular heartbeat. Might need a top up eventually, but happy to use the odd beta blocker when necessary, and manage lifestyle.

Just to say, the first 18 months was probably a settling down period..... My EP was cross that I wasn't totally 'cured' but hey, I have been much happier since the op....

Wonderful to hear your story Lizty, I felt so well supported by At Thomas's, hope I don't need another one, but if so, know what I am in for now xxx
