Quick question for anyone who’s had an ablation

Sorry, me again.

Just wanted a bit of advice really. I have developed quite a tender lump in my groin, just above where the puncture wound is. It’s sore to touch but fine when I’m not moving around.

Those with experience - is this normal? I know it’s been less than a week, and didn’t want to bother the hospital yet. I will contact them if it gets worse though.

Thanks in advance. 😊

Sounds about right to me but if it get worse or starts to leak or anything like that please contact your arrhythma nurse where it was done. Most people have some really spectaular and colourful bruising which can take several weeks to fade away.

Thank you for your quick reply. No, there’s nothing leaking and the hole has finally scabbed over now.

My bruise is huge & extremely colourful! Seems to be spreading too but it’s not sore. Just where the lump is.

I’m glad that sounds normal. I’ll keep an eye out. 👍🏼

Yes, I had lump or hematoma the size of large walnut which took weeks to disappear, but it did eventually.

Thank you for letting me know that.

Did you need to do anything about it or see anyone? Or did you just wait for it to go?

I talked to my arrythmia nurse as no one warned me of this affect from the catheter wound area & they said exactly what Bob said. I was completely unprepared for how big it would get or how long it would take to go so I after 2 weeks I saw my GP who reassured me it was perfectly normal.

Okay. Thank you so much for sharing that. There’s no better advice than from those who’ve had it. 😊

Yes, I had a lump after one of my ablations. I was convinced they'd left something behind in me. My GP assured me all was ok, but still I worried and went to A&E where once again I was told all was well.

As CDreamer said they're called haematoma's and are quite common.

I have to say I don't remember mine being sore though.

Thank you. The soreness is only when I walk around, as the lump is right on the crease where I walk.

I’ll monitor it and give the hospital a call if things get worse. I’m reassured to find it’s fairly common though.

Yes it happened to me every time. Should be nothing to worry about unless it gets larger or shows any sign of infection.

You should have been given a number to call when you were discharged. If you are in any way concerned you can call that number they won’t mind that’s what the number is for.

Thank you. 👍🏼

As you can see, it's perfectly normal and a great reminder of what your heart has gone through

Yep. Made me feel better. My GP called this afternoon so I asked about it. All said the same. It’s a bit sore but I guess it’ll take time to heal.

Thank you. 😊

Apparently it can take anywhere up to 4 weeks, but don’t do any strenuous exercise or lifting while you are healing

No, I’m being very careful. Thank you.

😂 Yep. Definitely good advice! How’s your bruise?

Jajarunner profile image

Colourful. It was about width and length of a spread out palm and it was a week before I could walk without pain! And they told me I could run after 48 hours! As if! I'm thinking three months...

Two weeks today and feeling less fai t and less jelly legs on my tiny walks!

My most recent ablation in March left the tiniest of scars and no bruising, this was a first.

In the past there has been some awful bruising and lumps. They all eventually disappear but I would advise to try not to keep checking and touching, bathe the area 1/2 times a day and as JeanJeanie said go commando for as long as you can. Nice and cool at this time of the year. I do hope it has gone well for you.

Thank you. Yes that is definitely good advice. I haven’t been bathing it other than normal showering as the scab has only just formed and I’m so scared of knocking it off. Just very gentle at the moment I think!

All the best. 😊

I was told to bathe it at least once a day, no soap, just tepid water, I used a cotton wool pad, and then another one to dry which was much gentler than a towel. Take care.

Thank you. That’s good advice. I’ll try that. 😊👍🏼

I had a tender lump for a few weeks. Gradually went away as bruising died down. I phoned the AF nurse and was reassured that everything was OK.

Mine was very sore longer than usual. I'm a slow healer.

I’m hoping that things will improve soon. 😊

had mine about a year ago and I do remember some kind of lump on there I think it's the little piece they put in there that dissolves after a while

Yes that’s right. Unbelievable to me how paltry the aftercare is and the information that every person should be receiving postop. .
