Cataract surgery and anticoagulants

I have been given a date for cataract surgery- quite lucky I think to get this date before actually progressing to the white stick stage of cataract development. The hospital say I don’t need to stop the anticoagulants (Endoxaban in my case) before the op. They only seemed concerned if I was on Warfarin. Just wondering if anyone has had cataract removal and what advice they were given?

Thanks 😊

I was on Apixaban and had both cataracts done privately last year.I do not really have that kind of money but was pretty scared of a complete stranger or' newbie 'doing the job.I did not have to stop the Apix. but i was given a pretty good check re. my heart by the anaethetist who administered sedation before the ops. There was no blood visible whatsoever and no bruising and i went home and took my usual eve. Apix. dose.

I had left eye cataract done in July 2018 and was, and still am, on Warfarin. From what I can remember I didn't stop Warfarin. Why not check with consultants office/secretary to be sure.

Hi had a cataract op a week ago if on warfarin have to have a bloods done before, all other anticoagulants work differently so no blood test and just take them as normal. Good luck with the surgery very quick and painless just keep using the drops as advised after.

I'm on Pradaxa and had cataract surgery in January, 2018. I did not have to stop Pradaxa prior to the surgery per the cataract surgeon's instructions. Everything turned out fine. Good luck!

I can concur with the above experiences. Though I have not had cataract surgery my wife had fast growing cataracts and had both eyes done within 3 weeks of each other back in 2012 , painless, and easy just local anaesthetic, no bruising or bleeding and as soon as the dressing was taken off her eye later the same day she could see clearly - not every one has this experience but a lot do. The hardest part was bathing and washing hair without getting soap into her eyes and keeping on with the bathing and drops for the month afterwards jsut have to do it all religiously and you will be fine. Check and check again about medication though and if you need to do blood tests before going in as it is too late to be told you had to do something or get something before and then can't have the op. This has happened to me twice due to not being given full information from nurse on telephone before op - personally I do not like doing pre ops by phone but it seems to be the way things are going. Understand it saves time but would rather be face to face or fill in a form and then get written instructions.
