Had a partial knee replacement on 22nd Nov. I made sure to inform surgeon and Anaesthetist that I have SVT & AF and the meds I’m on, Bisoprolol & Flecainaide. To ensure the extra they’ll give me is compatible. The extras are now a blood thinner Eliquis and opiate Oxycodone.
Well, how to know what’s effecting me, the anaesthetic or the pills 😳 This morning my HR went down to 49 and I felt off. BP was high for me. I’m only on the blood thinner for short time and also the Oxycodone.
While I was in hospital, was really frustrated trying to ask questions and get my concerns listened too without getting a lecture on DVT 😥
I’m a Complementary Therapist for 22 years with Anatomy & Physiology, so don’t need lecturers.
I’m concerned due to the fact the NHS Dr when I was in ICU over dosed me!
I phoned my Drs surgery and my GP was to phone, think she did but didn’t get the phone quick enough. Hasn’t phoned back since
Now feeling upset at the response to my needing to explain and be listened to as patient and concerned about the effects the drugs my experience having.

Sorry, I was in ICU end of May when I was diagnosed with AF.
When in last Friday for knee op the nurses just wanted to give me the pills and when I said I wasn’t feeling right and tried to explain how, just said ‘you’ve had an op, it’s the anaesthetic’. But I know the meds could also make me feel the same and that was it, they left.
This was a Private hospital paid for with my health insurance.
It's a great shame that too often we need to be our own advocate and stick up for ourselves, have been in your position in having to insist I didn't feel right despite all "observations" and was proved right.
The Dr went off on one about DVT 😳 I KNOW! The training I got looked like I was training to be a Dr, as said by husband. The ‘Medics’ judge us, bit know nothing about us.
Well I care and am here to listen to you. I can understand your frustration, I often wonder why it is that when in hospital we're expected to just do as we're told and not ask any questions. We're treated a bit like mindless idiots!!!
I think your GP will call you again, so make sure you have your phone nearby. Are you on your own at home?
What strength are the medications you're taking now and what was the one that you were overdosed on in ICU.
Oxycodone 5mg x2 and Apixaban 2.5mg x2 Home alone at the moment, husband gone shopping. I’ve read people having trouble with Apixaban wasn’t in blood thinners before, obviously I need to because of the risk of DVT
What dose of Bisoprolol and Flecainide are you on? Were you taking those before the op? I guess you may be a younger person (under 65) if you weren't taking anticoagulants for your AF before?
I think it's all the medication you're taking, plus anaesthetic, the operation and drug overdose given by doc. Hopefully you'll soon start feeling brighter, your poor body has been bombarded with drugs!
Deep breathing, slowly in and then out through the mouth quickly with a whoosh, always brings my BP down. See if it will do the same for you. I just do that about 8 times.
I wouldn't be happy with my heart rate going down to 49 and you really do need to seek medical advice about that. It may be normal for some peoples pulse rate to go that low, but it doesn't sound like it is for you, it would make me feel very odd too.
Just to but in here I am interested to understand why, if you have AF and SVT, that you were not already anticoagulated long before your knee replacment?
?? When I was taken to a&e, transferred to UCI, the Dr there had given me 20 mg Rivoxaban and 7mg Bisoprolol. This over dosed me, took BP really LOW, feeling 😳 getting weird feeling in right arm while trying to speak to 111. Back to hospital to see outpatient dr, told to stop Rivoxaban, which I already had as insert said to. Paid to see my Cardiologist couple days later, whose 👀 would have disappeared into his hair if he had any 😂 Changed meds to 2.5 Bisoprolol £ 50mg x 2 Flecainaide
I told hospital Dr who prescribed that when on verapamil it made my BP so low, I was nearly decking it😳 Cane off that after 5 years, no checks in all that time, due to really nasty side effects,

That was Tuesday! Was about medication and how to take them. Also taking paracetamol 😳 so many pills and getting into a routine and not making myself sick 🤢 I was discharged without a nurse sitting and explaining the regime. There was no one around when we packed and left. No help to the car etc. 😥 I’ve downloaded a pill app.
Did you have a GA? I had a total knee replacement done under spinal anaesthesic, last March. That said, I have no recollection of any part of the procedure. I continued taking bisoprolol and flecainide. On the morning of discharge I felt rough, washed out, weak, and decided to lie down. Luckily a nurse decided to look into things and a blood test revealed a very low red blood count suggesting I had lost more blood than expected during the procedure. I ended up having a transfusion and another 48 hours in hospital.
I'm very sensitive to both drugs and the pharmacist and on call Dr balanced my dose depending on My BP and pulse rate.
Now for the good news!
My new knee is brilliant and has improved my quality of life immensely.
BP checks were a joke, they used the wrong sized cuff, too small, the machine would go and go and go😳 I have an A&D BP machine. I’m a rare blood group. A Rhesus neg. there has been times in past I thought I may be low in iron. They did blood tests, said ok, but what for I wouldn’t know.
My operated foot had four white circular marks, unexplained and NO ONE knew what they were or cause! I’d said to Dr as he didn’t know either that I’m not leaving with them.
I’ve had to fight to get a nickel free implant 😳
I just had a total knee replacement on 9/5 then had to have it redone on 10/29. I had a bad reaction the first time they got me up when my heart rate dropped in to the 40’s. They told me it was a vasovagal response, not uncommon. It happened once since Ive been home in the middle of a therapy session, I just laid down til it passed.
😳 I’ve had quite a rigmarole with a surgeon because I wanted to know what the implant was composed of. My sister and mum are allergic to nickel and we all can react to various things. 3rd consultant was so much better attitude than the others and willing to use nickel free. I’m sorry you had to go through it twice close together 😥
My husband and I did quite a bit of research on metal implants. A skin test will not guarantee you will or not be allergic to nickel implant. The medical establishment say inconclusive 🙄 In my view, if you have a person with allergies/intolerances, you should err on the side of caution. Sod’s law, I would react and after scalding my thighs, 2nd degree and the AF diagnosis, I’m not taking a chance.
I had my 2nd knee replaced almost 10 years ago with a local anaesthetic. All was fine until my knee joint was packed with oxycodone at which point I felt suddenly very I'll and lost conscience ness. Long story short after several days it was discovered I was violently allergic to oxycodone. Every time I was given a tablet I lost consciousness.
All the medics were adamant it was impossible until they had to admit it was the case.
Oxycodone is a very dangerous drug for me too. I had it after surgery and even one dose made me feel dreadful, as you described. Decided I would cope without it and just use paracetamol. It wasn’t worth feeling so bad.
