Root filling and adrenaline free anaesthetic?

I always have adrenaline free anaesthetic for dental extractions and normal fillings but am probably looking at root fillings for a wisdom tooth. Because of the length of the procedure I wonder if adrenaline free anaesthetic will be good enough.

I would be interested in the experiences of others with root fillings before I talk to my dentist.

I had one done and it was sufficient. It was a front tooth so liable to extra nerve excitement so to speak. Never totally pleasant having root canal work done though in my experience...pre AF and Post AF....

Tell them if you are in pain...agree a signal like a raised hand beforehand works for me. Good luck xxx

Ohhhh - a front tooth would totally freak me out. The last root I had done was before AF and it was pretty awful.

A root filling on a wisdom tooth would be unusual/difficult as they are so far back and access limited unless your wisdom tooth has drifted forward and is more accessible.

It’s a lower one and its counterpart was root filled about 20 years ago - quite a wide open stretch as I remember! My dentist is prepared to do it rather than extract.

I think you can look at it two ways. As suggested you can indicate if you need a top up. You may also want to consider the increase in your "natural" adrenaline you might generate if you were concerned re pain. I'm sure you know that adrenaline keeps the local anaesthetic local and the reefore more effective.

My dentist happily gives me non adrenaline containing local but says AF isn't in her " book of words" for conditions where adrenalin is contraindicated.

I had these done with normal anaesthetic and had no AF problems or bleeding ( on apixaban)

I had 2 root canals about 3 years ago...and crowns...and no prob with adrenaline free injections.

Have to admit I obtained very small quantity of diazepam from GP to see me through the very long sessions. 🙄 plus I took headphones and my tiny radio to distract me.....

Yes...highly recommended! Actually it was 3 root canals .....Both my cats needed dental treatment at the same time so bank account was vastly depleted ( nearly 2k just for cats. ...at vets of course !😉😆)

My cats needed very expensive dental work too, build-up of tartar leading to inflamed gums which led to one elderly cat having all her teeth removed. When I got my dog, I read somewhere about the benefit of adding a small amount of seaweed powder to her food. So she has had the powder added (every day) since she was a pup - no tartar whatsoever and she is now two. Apparently it is fine for cats and humans (although I haven't tried it!).

Thanks Irene. I shall bear that in mind although they will surely notice any tampering with their food ! One of the cats had removal

of all teeth so won't apply to her ...she was only 12 at the time.

Hi, I have had a number of root canals done. I have had the adrenaline free anaesthetic for many years since I once fainted after the usual one. I have never had any problems at all. Once my dentist did top up but she did that before I felt any pain. Your dentist should be aware of the time taken etc for the procedure and make sure all is well. I'm sure all will go well. Thanks Kath, that is very reassuring. I had an unpleasant reaction to adrenaline anaesthetic when I had nose packing done after a bad nosebleed so I have avoided it since.

I had a root canal recently and they used regular Novocaine in fact I had 4 injections as it was painful even after those and I was absolutely fine tbh. If I had have used the adrenaline free stuff, I’m not sure I would have managed to bear the pain!

It does seem to be a personal thing and I suppose the shape and position of the roots may be a factor. Risk of pain versus risk of heart rhythm disturbance = try it and see I suspect! Thank you for the info.

That’s what I did to be honest, took a chance and it seemed ok. Got to have the root canal finished in a couple of weeks, so I’ll let you know how I get on.

There thing that was horrible was the blood I spat out was blackish and the Dentist said it was arrested blood 🤮

Yes, non adrenaline was much less long lasting and I can ask for a top up - or scream perhaps. 😩

I always have adrenaline free jabs for dental work as I’m allergic to adrenaline ...

Had a root canal done once .....

No prob with jab ...

Would never have it done again tho ...

Too long a procedure for very little gain ..

Thanks Woofer - long procedure but it gave me 19 extra years with the other lower wisdom tooth and its extraction is something I would rather forget!

hello my son has an Amplatzer device fitted in his heart to close a hole Whenever he gets any dental treatment he has the adrenaline free injections He has had root canal etc takes a bit longer to numb but fine

Yes I had a root canal filling at the beginning of the year and was fine with the Adrenalin free anaesthetic. I also had toe and foot surgery last week with Adrenalin free sedation and again was fine. Good luck

Ps.....as it is a wisdom tooth and so far back, would it not be easier to take it out as it doesn’t exactly help eating and chewing????? I am on apixaban and had a tooth out recently (next to my root canal - separate days) and no problem. Again, good luck

Thanks Tapanac - that is certainly some good experiences with andrenaline free. I realise that wisdom teeth aren’t so important - but, as my dentist may be willing to fill it, I’ll go along. I had the other lower one taken out last year and had a bad time, so a bit reluctant to go again so soon.

You will be grand. You just need more injections to numb it like normal. So might be numb for longer after it. I'd a root canal non adrenal injection as I have a heart arrithma. Best of luck really need to go myself. My roots canal is failing after so many years. 😭X

Was going out to lunch so took 1 cocodamol 8/500 and 1 paracetamol. Glad didnt take2 cocodamol. Felt very weird and wonderful and dizzy for about 6 hours. Havent taken one for about 20 years. Not recommended! Mind you got me out of all the political discussion that ensued.

Hi there--- I had a complex root canal filling in a molar. The first session lasted 4 hours and the second 3 hours and 20 minutes. I had adrenaline free anaesthetic and only needed a 'top up' during the 4 hour session. You will be fine--the dentist will give you more pain relief if you need it. Worry not! Good luck.

Oh my goodness - poor you facing such a trial! Great that the anaesthetic worked so well. I saw my dentist this afternoon and we have decided that the tooth is sound but is grumbling because I have been clenching against my biteguard at night. So, hopefully it will settle. May your tooth last for decades!
