My brother is having his in March unfortunately I’m away, I usually take him to all his appointments, he is having a general anaesthetic, how long will he stay in hospital, having done in Liverpool, if discharged , will he be allowed to drive home the next day, he lives in Manchester, has no one to drive him,

I was told a couple of days ago that you are not allowed to drive for two days but the EP then said he would recommend not driving for a week, I am having sedation though not a GA. I’m not sure if that would make a difference. Must be hard for you both the the appointment is for when you are away. Hope it all goes ok and you get the transport problem sorted. Take care 😊

Thank you so much, I’ve looked after him since he was a baby , plagued with illness, and quite a few heart problems besides flipping AF , yes I’m struggling not being there, thanks again your info is very helpful, he has no family but me, and this appointment was gotten by me emailing the docs to get him sorted, ha ha so I’m to blame 😂😂

But he is over the moon, fingers crossed, x

Your brother will not be allowed to drive for two days after his ablation. Usually when people have an ablation they go home the following day, so he will not be able to drive himself then. Also will there be anyone who will be able to care for him for a few days afterwards at home, provide meals etc. He will most likely be feeling very tired and should not be encouraged to do much for the first week or so. Would he be able to postpone his ablation until you are around to help?

You should investigate transport provided by the NHS. There is usually a phone number on your appointment letter. I use it for transport from North Wales to Liverpool. There is often some waiting around but they have to work round unpredictable discharge times.I had to be in Liverpool for 07.00 and was discharged at 15.00 the next day. It was 4 days before I attempted to drive.

I'm sure the ambulance service will take him home once he is ready for discharge

The hospital should arrange transport for you as you won't know his discharge date Just make sure he lets them know he will need transport provided

Hi, Hertbeat321

just to let you know I had my Ablation performed Monday under GA just passed and I was told that you are not allowed to drive for a week after as your insurance will be void if something happens and it is advised by the DVLA.

Please let your brother read my main post if he is at all worried regarding the procedure and it might put his mind at rest x

No driving for a minimum of 48 hours. Won't feel like it for longer than that likely. No travelling alone and preferably not on public transport. Usual release next day. but depends on time of procedure. If worried speak to hospital about possible patient transfer. I live in Devon but my first ablation was in London and I had a car arranged to take me home. Unfortunately I had complications and stayed in an extra day and lost my slot so had to arrange alternative from a different side of the family or wife would have had a ten hour round trip . Don't let him do what I did once and lie to them. Told them my wife was waiting in the car park. She was, Tiverton station car park! Even with a black cab across London and first class rail ticket I knew I was in trouble about 20 mins into the journey .

The getting home may be straight forward to sort but as Jean says it's being looked after once home. Any friends who could call in be a phone contact? Good idea if he gets some ready meals in and so on. Will you be away for long?

Thanks, I’ve got some contacts for him, and arranged someone to pop in, foood etc as you suggest, I’m home end of March, I’m dreading next Tuesday, I’ve always been there for him, I’ve just retired and for the first time ever taken a long break, away, I’m sure he’s in good hands at Liverpool, thanks again
