If you needed a catheter ablation for paroxysmal AF and cost or travel weren't a problem, what doctor would be the best choice?

In the U.K. Professor Schilling is considered to be leader of a very capable field but Internationally, Professor Michel Haïssaguerre, Professor of Cardiology at the University of Bordeaux apparently is your man!

It's been a few years that he no longer does ablations. He may be working on building the world renown heart centre in France. The two in Bordeaux are Dr. Jais and Dr. Hocini.

The one I formed a relationship with and I felt not only was a good at his job but also cared about what happened to me as a person.

I believe Dr Natale in the US. Get ready to put down some serious cash should you choose him $$$$$

From what I have read principally here Dr Sabine Ernst in London should make the Short List.

I would say Prof. Schilling from personal experience.

PS - the EP I chose to do both my ablations was one of Prof Schillings team. I don’t think it is helpful to get too stuck on names as even the best - though how on earth would we judge - on the day of your ablation, even the best can have an off day.

The advice I was given was to choose someone with good training, with enough experience to have a track record you can investigate, who was prepared to answer probing questions (ie - who could drop their ego) but not too experienced as to be stuck into habits.

I agree totally with CD as going to any hospital does not guarantee that any partiocular doctor will perfom the procedure. Emergencies happen everywhere as many here have discovered adn it is the total package of facilities and team which matters. On a point of order though few Electrophysiologists would apprecaiae being called surgeons. Most think they are better than that! (so do I)

Re secontry's comments Sabine assisted at one of the first catheter ablations in Germany in the early nineties so propabably has more experience than most .

It is not a reply really , but a relevant question. Bordeaux has been mentioned as having the best electrophysiologists , I think Lille ranks high too. London also , though not which hospital, is talked about . However , no one has mentioned Papworth or Harefield , any comments?

It is very true that even if you pay, which you should not have to, you can not be certain that the guy you hope for will actually going to do the procedure on the day. When you put your trust and ££ s in someone ,it is incredibly disconcerting to meet a total stranger in the operating theatre.

I had one in UK and the guy I had was fantastic. In Manchester Heart Centre Dr Gwill Morris. Fairly new consultant but watch this space. Two years on and no problems

I carefully chose Prof. Osman at Coventry, good record ,very experienced. However at our last clinic appointment I was surprised that he said it may not be him but one of the team of consultants, none of whom I have ever met! I shall try and find out a bit more about them.

BUT IF money was no object etc,I would be happy to pay him to do the double ablation.

I am really concerned and told him so,but he could not offer any guarantees!

I have read good reports on bordeaux here....
