Are you having it under GA or sedation? There are lots of topics on the subject if you search ablation, but I've had 4 if that helps ease the worry!

I am having it under GA.... Thanks for your reply...

Hi Panthers,

The two links below will take you to two AF Association fact sheets which help you to prepare for and recover from your ablation. No doubt you have, or will be asked to attend a pre-procedure appointment where they will go through the procedure with you and explain what you need to do regarding medication. If you can, it might be useful to take someone with you to help absorb all the information provided.

If you are having a general anaesthetic, you will obviously miss all the fun but if you are being sedated, you may be more aware of what’s going on. If at any stage you begin to feel too uncomfortable, make the team aware and they will increase levels of sedation. The important thing is to follow the recovery advice as this is crucial to getting a good result. Hospitals obviously vary, but it seems some do not provide much in the way of recovery information so stick to the details in the fact sheets.

Sunday’s are generally quiet, but I’m sure others will respond as well, but good luck, and please let us know how you get on.....let’s hope 2019 is a good year for you. One other thing, as your procedure is just after Christmas, be ultra careful not to miss your anticoagulant medication and go easy on all the naughty stuff (food ‘n booze) over the holiday.

I have to say that I'm surprised you are having it under GA. I was concious the whole time and the EP quite often asked me questions which hopefully aided his work.

Anyway mine was a great success so good luck with yours.

I found sedation did not help me my experience in my first 3 ablations was awful and therefore for my last 4 ablations I had GA.

It not uncommon for ablations to be done under GA but is more difficult to arrange as they don’t engage an anaesthetist if they do it under sedation.

It can be an individual decision by the hospital, EP and of course we all have a choice and sign a consent form.

I had my procedure under sedation. The key after is rest rest and more rest. Expect some pops bangs and whistles from your heart. It may not be happy. I had my ablation in March of this year. Feeling a lot better. I did have some pain in my chest after when eating. Some eptopic and missed beats but in the main it’s been a very positive thing for me. Enjoy the festivities and here’s to a healthy 2019.

I had mine in 2013 under GA and it was easy as unaware of anything. It is a long procedure so don’t be surprised. Be prepared to be a bit groggy after and wound in groin which should heal up quickly.

Bring water, lip salve and something to read/listen to.

Be very gentle with yourself for 2 or 3 weeks.

No heavy exercise for a few months but walking is good.

You may experience various arrhythmias for a while as your heart heals. It took 5 months for mine to go away completely.

Expect a higher than normal resting heartbeat which again can take a year to return to normal.

I am af free since 2013.

Good luck 🍀

I had two ablations early this year, one for afib and one for a flutter which only started 9 days after my afib ablation. Both under sedation. Neither a big issue. Was quite interesting watching it.

So far succesful , no drugs at all since may 15th. No afib or flutter since the ablations in jan and February. Brilliant!

Good luck for success with yours
