Hi

After review this Monday I was asked to do twice daily BP tests. Results all over the place high/low or saying error!

Can these electric pump monitors cope with AF patients?

In permanent AF by the way.

I use one from Costco that also shows Irregular or AF ... $38 USD. Works great and has software to keep records both on your puter and on the monitor to track back history..

Many monitors will tell you that your heartbeat is irregular and that this may be because of AF or possibly some other form of arrhythmia but most will not give an accurate blood pressure reading when in AF. The only accurate method was to use one of the glass tube/mercury monitors which are no longer available due to issues with mercury. Omron monitors have a good reputation, but you really need to take the average of three readings, each with a gap of well over 3 mins, and this is probably as close as you are going to get to an accurate reading.....

I am in permanent AF and obviously there are no normal readings, so to say, without AF. I've tried talking it over a period of a few minutes with an Omron and the figures can vary quite a lot so wonder if there's a way to do it accurately or not?

I am in permanent AF and use a Boots monitor, not one of the best but adequate. I always take about 4 readings over a period of 15-20 mins, first one is normally rubbish but I do end up with reasonable readings most of the time. I also get error message as well. If I am in very fast AF then I give up because it will be all over the place and lots of error readings.

Hi R1100S1

I use an Omron M3 it has always shown me when in af and has been good in the blood pressure. The Omrons are used in hospitals and doctors. I also have a finger moniter which shows my pulse rate, it is up and down like a yo-yo when I am in af. Hope this helps.

The bp monitor cannot tell your hr when In afib, it can be showing half of what it really is.

It also gives erratic BP results. I am not sure that this is a fault of the monitor or just that an arrhythmic heart does not pump blood reliably so your blood pressure does fluctuate, sometime your ventricle may be empty when it contracts, sometimes full depending whatever the atria passes too it.

My cardiologist asked my GP to fit a 24 hour BP monitor a few months back. The surgery machine coukdn’t cope and just kept inflating until my arm turned purple. We abandoned that and nurse recommended I use my own home monitor every waking hour or so and then if I got up during the night. Either it wouldn’t register at all or took several attempts before it would.

My BP has previously been described as borderline. I have refused to take medication on the basis of these measurements.
