Sudafed

I’ve been prescribed pseudorphedrine hydrochlorde ( sudafed) 60mg four times a day to relieve pressure in my ears. Jp said it was fine to take these with my heart problems but a friend has just told me it’s not. Anyone else taken sudafed ??

Hi Redders, I've always ducked any decongestant medicine but some might be ok according to this article ... Sudafed is mentioned but please have a read and see what you think first, proceed with caution is the theme.. Hope you feel better soon 👍

As you know I am not medically trained but many anti-congestion meds are not kind if you have any heart rhythm problems as they can be pro arrhythmic. Personally I would avoid if humanly possible but we are all different.

Thanks Bob, I don’t think I’ll take them then. I don’t feel I have any blocked sinuses but doc says there is pressure in my ears, causing the deafness. Regards Val

I took Sudafed years before I had AF and it caused my heart to race. Definitely wouldn’t touch it now.

I took sudafed before I had afib for stopped up ears but I wouldn't take it now.

It did relieve the ear pressure and was usually after playing tennis. Now that I'm not playing the ears are better, hope yours are also.

I was told by pharmacist - definately NOT to take it but then I think that was to prevent trigerring an episode, if you are in permanent AF I’m not sure. Have you asked the pharmacist?

Personally I find steaming with Olbas oil more effective and Sudafed makes me feel terrible anyway.

I did ask the pharmacist and she said ok but I’ve taken 2 and it has eased the pressure but I’m not taking anymore. I hav’nt felt bunged up at all so was surprised I was given sudafed. Hope you’re feeling well CD x

I’m good thank yu, hope you feel better soon. I hate feeling bunged up in the sinus area. My Chiro showed me a great way of releasing pressure by creating a vacuum in years your nasal passages but it’s impossible to explain. xx

I avoid anything with pseudoephedrine in, I have most uncomfortable heart palps afterwards...

Sudafed made my heart race too. Long before I had AF so I wouldn't risk it.

I definitely would not take it if you can avoid it. I find inhaling steam is the best for me, I don’t even put anything in it as can’t stand the smell and takes my breath away. Hope it helps.

Sudafed has been a "no no" for me since being diagnosed with afib - it makes my heart race, but your result may be different. Flonase is what they gave me to take once daily in each nostril for my ears, with something like Afrin only when I'm about to get on a plane. Good luck to you and lets hear how you make out!

I’ve never heard of Flonase, are you in the UK ?

No, I'm in the US, but the generic name for it is fluticasone and its over the counter here, so its most likely not a prescription there either. Its supposedly for allergies but my otolaryngologist (ENT specialist) gave it to me for pressure in the ear and I take it year round. Hope you can find it - I believe it does help
