Sore throat and cough post ablation

Hi everyone, I finally took the plunge and my ablatation 2 days ago. I didnt feel anything afterwards apart for a very very sore throat. Also, they tried take my the stitches out of my Groin a number of times but it kept bleeding so they had to keep applying pressure - ouch! Now the drugs have worn off I have a light sore / tight chest but it’s very bearable - nothing too much really and no pain in the groin area at all. I have a cough, but the thing that is still really bugging me is the sore throat and severe pain when swallowing. Had a look down my throat and can see blisters. I gargled with salt water last night to help it heal. Has anyone had this before post ablation? Any tips for this to go away as I also have a sore ear! Thanks in advance

I just took paracetamol and sucked on lossengers for the first couple of days. If it’s really bad check with the pharmacist about a spray (I’ve had them for throat issues previously) but check of course that it’s okay with your meds. I’m not sure if you had a cryo or RF ablation. I had RF and had a few things down my throat- transoesophegeal echocardiogram, temperature probe and of course the general anaesthetic tubes. It’s no wonder our throats hurt. Take care.

Thanks for the reply Kaz747 I also had the RF ablation and all those things down my thoat. It’s a sensitive area so no wonder it sore, well if that’s the worst of it then I’m happy, fingers crossed I keep healing well x

I’m 8 days post ablation and my throat is pretty good now, still a little tender though.

Did you have a general anaesthetic?

The endotracheal tube would likely cause a sore throat. Blisters on the back of the throat and earache seem unusual complications of ablation. If these get worse in the next few hours I would be looking for a medical opinion.

As we explain in our fact sheet on recovery from ablation this is very common and usually due to either intubation during general anaesthetic or to a TOE, (Trans oesophageal echocardiogram ) performed to check for any clots in the heart before the ablation procedure starts. Treat as any sore throat and it will soon pass.

Although a sore throat and cough - my cough took months to go - are very common, I would second Oyster’s advice, salt water gargling should help.

Had my ablation a week ago. Sore throat terrible until 4 days later, managed it with paracetamol. I still have ache in chest but not surprised by this, considering what they did! Good luck with your recovery

Thank you, I read this last night and was very reassured by it as I was concerned i wasn't bouncing back!! (People have told me that they know someone who was back at work the same day, and in 2 days!!) thank you
