Occasional Celebrex whilst on Eliquis?

I'm currently on Eliquis (2x 5mg) for A Fib and flutter. I also suffer from bad neck pain due to severe degenerative cervical discs and disc osteophytes. Paracetamol has not been of much help, and would like to try a NSAID on the occasional basis when the neck pain is unbearable.

I realise that anticoagulants and NSAIDS should not be taken together due to risk of bleeding, but I have read some studies stating that Celebrex has the lowest incidence of bleeding.

Just wondering if anyone has opinions on if it would be OK to take Celebex occasionally for these flareups. Or alternatively, any other medication suggestion ?

many thanks,

Mal

This is a quote from one report I read

"Celebrex is different from Mobic and other NSAIDs in that it causes less inflammation and ulceration of the stomach and intestine (at least with short-term use) and does not interfere with the clotting of blood."

Did you read my recent comments about having a 2 stage cervical discectomy? I was amongst the 20% of people with no neck pain whatsoever. Apparently 80% are in agony.

Go for the operation if possible. The only problem was me going in to AF.

80% in agony after the procedure?? That doesn’t appeal to me😳

No. I had no neck pain at any stage. I was flabbergasted when they told me that my poor mobility and left arm weakness were caused by 2 herniated discs in my neck. I had severe stenosis. The operation was apparently a complete success. They put 6 marker pins in place so that future Xrays can see their position. Still no neck pain.

Great news. Well done 😊

You could consider switching to warfarin. NSAIDs still interact with warfarin but at least the effect can be measured with a Coaguchek and allowed for. There's an article here discussing the interaction:

Interesting article. Thanks Mark but I’ve been on Warfarin before and didn’t like the constant blood checks. Had a lot of trouble getting level stable

I have been on eliquis for 4 years and Celebrex for at least 17 years. I have severe RA, on methotrexate, prednisolone, Rituximab etc. Know the advice but take the drugs with consultant’s blessing. No problems thus far.

Best wishes Pam

Thanks for that Pam. I will probably take it just for major flare ups But it does appear to be the pick of the NSAIDS if you just have to take something for the pain. I’ll also take a PPI with it (Pantaprazole) which they say protects stomach (but not intestines)

Hope your success continues

I was put on Eliquis Oct. 2017 and I have been on Celebrex for years. I take it each night and its a 200 mg. tablet. I have had no issues and like someone mention its the least NSAID for bleeding issues. Cardio EP saw no problems with it nor did the cardio that did some of my other procedures. Do take the Celebrex with food. You will have better results using it on a regular basis rather than just occasional. Anti inflamm. meds work best when taken on a regular regime.

Thanks for that. I have read sometimes it is recommended to take with a PPI like pantoprazole to stop stomach irritation. Do you do that ?
