Ectopic beats.

I had an endoscopy on Wednesday. My ectopics, which had almost stopped except for the occasional one, have returned with a vengence. I believe the endoscopy has caused this. I am posting to ask if anyone has an opinion on this please.

I would think it's quite likely as the endoscopy will have irritated the vagus nerve. It should settled down again- hopefully soon!!

Do your deep slow breathing exercises .. That will stop them.

Can only say that I've had 2 endoscopies neither of which brought on ectopics or any irregularity.

Possibly also stress might be a contributing factor. I have no personal experience, but the thought of it would possibly scare the pants off me...(literally). Anything that helps you to relax I’m sure will help.....

I had an endoscopy some years ago and my af kicked in afterwards, it was my first af event. Having said that my last endoscopy last year didn't cause either af or ectopics.

I suspect it was the endoscopy triggering your ectopics combined with stress, possibly being dehydrated too by not being able to drink in the hours before it. A perfect storm. They will settle but horrible while they last. Always something isn't there.

A lot of gastroenterologists are very knowledgable about the vagus nerve and it’s effects on the heart more so than some cardiologists.

It is very likely the endoscopy has upset the vagal nerve they pump in a small amount of air to expand the stomach to have a better look at the linning of the stomach and duodenum this will have the same effect as overeating or gas in the stomach which is well known for setting off ectopic beats and AF.

Gastric problems and that nasty little bug helicobacter pilori have all been linked to internal inflammation in the body and Increased attacks of AF etc

Hi Gwersey,

No personal experience BUT I agree that the procedure is most likely to have, in some immeasurable way, to have caused some sensitivity to an already inflamed/dysfunctional vagal nerve. I would also suggest that as not all patients with AF are vulnerable to the influences of a dysfunctional vagal nerve this in itself would account for why some who have this procedure experience this outcome while others do not.

I most certainly agree with 'Sportscoach' opening sentence, no doubt about it.

If you 'Google' ........... schematic diagram of vagal nerve.... you should get some idea of how extensive this nerve is and therefore how vulnerable it is to various sensitivities. Vagal is latin for vagus, often referred to as the wandering nerve ! Get the diagram up you'll see what I mean.

I totally understand where you are coming from and I am in the same boat. I went for endoscopy last year and it brought a nasty bout of ectopics which I am still trying to fettle. I am due back there soon so I want to see what they say, I feel for you it is horrible.

Did your ectopics start immediately after endoscopy or later? Mine have been building up since Wednesday when I had it.

So disheartening to hear you still have them. Hope they go soon.

Don't be disheartened everyone's different! I don't how long afterwards it was I just know they came on........ I have been battling stomach, anxiety and heart issues for ages so I don't think its so straight forward with me. I do however think it started them off having the camera down?

I sympathise completely. I fight a constant battle against all three. Crippling anxiety has to be the winner by a long shot though.

Totally agree with Terry , I am on APOC - 5FU which is a topical anti cancer cream , the stress of the cure has my ectopics going particularly at night.
