Who will do my ablation?

Further to my post on Friday, i am a little fretful as my EP said he would 'probably' do my Afib and Aflutter ablation himself (he is the Lead EP for the department) but it might be one if his EPs.I would much prefer him to do it as we have a good working relationship and I trust him!

Anyone else had this scenario please?

Yes, I have and I told my EP right away that I would rather he did it and he then carried out all of my 3 ablations. Just let yours know either via his secretary or by letter that you want him to perform yours.

Wishing you well

Jean

At my local hospital I had an EP who was my lead but when discussing ablation he said it could anyone of five of them on the day. As much as I said I wanted him he said well you have a one in five chance. I eventually went to another hospital and have not as yet needed an ablation according to my new EP.

I guess the only way you will know is to ask him personally again and see what he says. It might make a difference and he did say probably which is better than possibly. Guess he could commit if you were going private. Good luck.

Ps a few weeks ago I needed surgery for something different to cardiac and asked the main consultant if he would be doing it and he said no he only did difficult complex operations but he would be giving me a competent surgeon. I said I was disappointed and scared, he sympathised but that was it. However on the day he did it after all, felt sorry for me I think.

Hi Wilsond, yes I had this last month when my consultant EP agreed to doing my Amulet device procedure as I was nervous and he was an expert in this field. When I arrived at the hospital for the op a different doctor introduced himself that I knew nothing about and said that my EP wasn't available. This was very worrying and I nearly backed out on the day! However I went ahead and needn't have worried as it all went well and when I checked him online later that week he is also an expert and lectures other doctors about this device. Haha I think I prefer him now to my original EP!

Yes i had similar experience,i had just assumed it would be the lead consultant doing it but on the day i was told that he was not even at the hospital that day.I was informed that another EP who i had never heard of would be doing it.I was a bit concerned to say the least, but he came and introduced himself and was very confident and assured me he had performed many successful ablations previously. His exact words were "piece of cake dont worry you will be fine, you wil be back in bed in a couple of hours all done" I would not say piece of cake exactly and it took 5 1/2 hours in total, but i dont think that was down to a lack of experience on his part.Just over a year has passed now and i have been AF free ever since.Good luck with your procedure im sure it will be fine

If he is giving to another Ep ask how many he has done and what the results have been - studies show that the experience of the operator is key - he may well have good results.
