I have had 2 episodes of afib and am on warfarin and metropolol. About a year prior to getting this diagnosis, I also found out I have an ascending aorta enlargement. Does anyone else have this issue? Thanks.

Hi HopeinHim,

I just joined this support group and it’s been a relief to have someone to write to about A-Fib and related conditions. I hope you find an answer soon. There are people on here who have gone through many things and maybe someone will find your notes and comment. I hope you heal soon. 😊

I have an aortic dissection with a false lumen and have had a successful ablation for AF two years ago. May be the only common factor in your post is the aorta but I thought it might give you a little comfort to read about someone else with aorta and Af on their medical records.

Let us know how you get on.

Yes I have a swollen aortic root. Have to have an annual CT scan to ensure it is stable ie below about 5cm. Had an ablation in October and was assured there was noconnection.

Any aneurysm is dangerous. If suspected, you really need the aorta checking for the full length, right through to the abdomen. This used to be done with an injectable dye + scanner of some kind. Injectables themselves sometimes give problems so it is not something you do without care and without reason. Here, in my opinion, is what counts:

1/ Establish a thorough comprehensive base line, then monitor changes.

2/ It is not the absolute size, it is change that matters. Some people have large Aortas and live that way all their lives.

3/ It is not the size at one point that counts. What counts is this: Is the whole length of the Aorta parallel? Now, obviously the Aorta tapers as it descends. But are there any bulges?

These are good thoughts. I am going to push for a full length scan. The doctors just don't seem to think it is important but from everything I read it is very important. Thanks!

I have an Aortic Root of 4.9cm at present being monitored and due for repair and valve sparing surgery on the 8th June this year. I have also had persistent AF since 2015. The enlarged Aorta was found during a routine CT scan associated with my AF. My heart it would appear is fine with little enlargement, I am lucky I suppose, my AF is well controlled with an HR of between low 60's and mid 80's. My AF causes me very little trouble I can still cycle, walk, swim and chase after my granddaughter. I am a 71 year old male.
