Reddish urine?

Has anyone experienced dark or cloudy urine? Or foamy urine because of Afib? I went to the doctor and he checked urine, but says there is nothing wrong. Could it be from the B12 supplements, or my kidneys not working efficiently because of Afib?

Hi Asdfvv, the normal response would be go see your GP but you have done that! I don’t want to get too personal here, but I assume they dipped a tester into your specimen. Did the sample show signs of any visible discolouration? Have they sent a specimen to be laboratory checked. If you are male, it is possible for blood vessels to burst and if you are taking anticoagulants this would be both visible and also show on the dip. Also worth checking semen too. Beetroot and other strongly coloured drinks could easily discolour urine, but I haven’t heard that AF can cause this type of problem. I guess the only safe thing to do is to see if it continues and if it does, go back to your surgery as soon as possible. Hope you get it resolved soon.....

It might be beet juice. I have been eating lots of beets. But not sure why it would be so cloudy after meals. The problem is, it gets cloudy shortly after I eat, but by the time I see a doctor, it is clear again.

I would hazard a guess that it is just that, beet juice and if you are in no pain when passing urine nor pain in the kidney area than it sounds likely. There are certain things we eat and drink that will colour urine and there are also certain things too that would point to something more serious, if you are unhappy however with your GP's diagnosis then seek a referral

Also suggest you google “B12 supplements and urine colour” as there are some references to urine discolouration

If you are on anticoagulants, you might be bleeding occasionally in small amounts. I call these bleeds "under the radar' bleeds because (tho usually come from the G.I. tract) they can happen elsehere. They can often be missed because they are occasional, don't cause major noticeable problems, and sx can be missed. Worth looking into.

Are you taking enough fluids? Sounds like it could be dehydration.

The only thing I would add to other posts is that b12 supplements made my urine green!

Definitely sounds beetroot related to me. I remember a colleague in quite a panic some years ago because she thought there was blood in her urine until she remembered she'd eaten a lot of beetroot the day before. Did you tell the doctor about the beetroot? I'm assuming that you have a regular kidney function blood test.

Ask at your surgery for a "red top" sample bottle. Wait until a few days after you have eaten beetroot and then, if your urine is cloudy etc, take a sample and take it to your doctor's.

You can buy your own urinalysis strips to check it yourself if you want.

realdoctors.co.uk sell them and they are the same strips used at my GP's and at my local hospital so they are accurate.

I get a lot of infections and blood in my urine so I am able to keep a check on it by using these strips. They test ten parameters. There are websites that explain the various readings too.

'Foamy' could imply blood in the urine, dark could indicate excess sugar. Philologus suggestion sounds good.
