Burning Smell with AF?

Has anyone ever experienced a burning smell, like toast or cigarettes, during an episode? I used to get it all the time but haven't had it for a while, but today it happened again.

Hi afafaf. I have never heard of this but if you are experiencing this then it is valid. Only one thought popped up. First, do you take PIP's (pill in the pocket) for episodes? An, if so, might the pills be causing taste and smell changes as a side effect?. Many meds (not just cardiac) across the board cause these types of changes. Don't know what else to suggest. What does your doc think? I think he should know. Not all side effects are discovered during a drug's initial research and development phase and you might be on to something. irina1975

I don't take PIPs, no. But I experienced this long before I was ever on beta blockers.

Olfactory hallucinations can be a symptom of a few conditions which might be worth exploring and worth mentioning to your doctor.

I suspect it's related to blood pressure and airways, but I am not a doctor so shouldn't speculate.

For the past week i have said to my husband that it smells like a cigarette is sitting alight in an ash tray. I’ve never experienced this before, but was quite surprised to read this comment today.

Yes I did smell burning cigarettes for about 18 months before being diagnosed with AF

For me propafanone causes a metallic taste. I have from time to time smelt smoke when there is none but can't tie it in to AF in particular.

I agree it worth mentioning to GP.

My hubby gets that, but he doesn't have AF. He does have high blood pressure though... I wonder if it's migraine related myself, with him, do you get migraines?

I get this quite often, it reminds me of my parents, who have passed but both smoked. also get the burnt toast smell.

I thought this was only me. I too get a smokey smell sometimes which might last a day or two.

Hi Afafaf

I had the same smell & taste in my throat for a few weeks recently when I was recovering from the Flu, I have permanent Afib and have never smoked.

It is very odd. I hadn't had it for a long time when it came back again yesterday.

Thanks for all your answers. I first experienced this a few years ago after getting a cold on a flight. It lasted for months. More recently (<2 years) I've been having it in tandem with AF. I've read that it can happen with anxiety/panic attacks, too. Eatsalottie said something about blood pressure, and I think it's related.

Weirdly, it puts me in mind of my misspent youth when I'd sometimes smoke weed, and the resultant rise in blood pressure would cause a similar feeling. Alas, no weed for many moons, but AF certainly supplies the side effects. I've also read that it can signal an impending stroke, but hopefully not!

Thanks for the advice from all, I will mention it to my doctor.

Very interesting thread.I have no experience of this. Unfortunately I have anosmia and would love to be able to smell things again.

Good advice to speak to your doctor.

Yes I get this at night before going to sleep. Had to go downstairs many times to check that there isn't a fire. Very annoying. I take apixaban and perindopril only.
