Recovery from ablation

I was told an ablation would be my best bet at recovery but i am wondering how recovery is, im scared of nausea.

Do you feel any nausea might be in connection with a general anaesthetic? You can perhaps opt for sedation instead.

I have just read a few recovery cases where a few hours after the people had bouts of nauseau. While in the hospital i assume i would be given something thru iv but after idk

I have no idea if it is common to feel nausea. I've had three ablations with sedation and, as others have said, have had none. My feeling was that the standard of care in hospital was very high and any problem there would be quickly sorted. You stay in for a few hours or overnight after the procedure.

I had a general anaesthetic for my ablation. I do not remember any nausea at all. I was very glad to have the ablation as AF was making life very difficult. If you have a history of nausea then you need to discuss this with your EP.

Hi Nichyr...I have had 3 ablations and nausea did not feature in my recovery at all. First 2 ablations were with sedation and third under GA.

General anaesthetic 5 hours Trivial sore throat, nothing else.

Also, had no problems of any kind after the ablation or months down the line, despite the lengthy assault on my left atrium.

I've had three ablations and from what I can remember I was sick after all of them. Two were after sedation and the last one with a GA. Yes, they give you something to stop the sickness and it works really quickly, almost within 15 minutes.

I appear to be more sensitive to chemicals in my body than most. I've always put it down to being brought up on a farm and having wholesome, additive free food, my dad grew all of our vegetables and kept chickens and animals for meat. Our water came from a natural supply and I remember at one time our water was pumped up electrically from a well into a tank. During my married life I tried to follow that healthy style of living, so don't think my body has a lot of resistance to additives etc. I have to take care with, colourings and fillings in pills. It looks like it's only me that's sick after an ablation.

Now you can see that I've spoken honestly here, so let me tell you something else honestly. Ablations are nowhere near as bad as we imagine they are going to be. The day after you'll probably feel really well, but quite often a great feeling of exhaustion hits you and that can last for a few weeks. Make sure you get plenty of rest in the first week and then start gradually doing a little more in the second.

do you think if I warn them of my sensitive stomach I could get something to help prevent getting sick in the first place?

Ijust have a phobia of throwing up, I don't know why but it terrifies the crap out of me

I sympathise with that, I was asked if I am sick after GA, yes always, and I have acid reflux probs too, so the anaesthetist gave me a massive dose of antisickness meds BEFORE the procedure, which worked fine but gave me a very dry woolly mouth so you need a sports bottle of water handy as you can't sit up or turn. Really I was so spaced out I wouldn't have cared but my team thought it was important to prevent sickness. I am sure yours will take you seriously if you explain that it is putting you off having the ablation. Best wishes!

I was brought up exactly the same as yourself in South Wales Uk, halfway up a mountain. All our vegetables were homegrown, our chickens were rarely eaten but we sold the eggs, I too seem to be sensitive to drugs. I have Svt and ectopics, I mainly shadow everybody and sometimes reply. I now live in Essex 15 miles outside London.

Hi there Nichyr, feeling nauseaous after a GA is not that uncommon. For one reason or another I have had a lot of surgery in my life, and I usually do feel nauseaous afterwards.

My second ablation was with a GA and was nausea free but gave me other very unpleasant aide affects, so for my third ablation I discussed my concerns with the anaesthetist before I went down for the op. He listened, altered the anaesthesia and because I warned him that I usually did feel nauseous after a GA, he gave me an anti-emetic before I even woke up. I did still feel nauseous as I was coming around but as soon as I mentioned it, I was given some more and the next time I woke up I was fine.

Please talk to your anaesthetists. He is the expert.

For what it is worth. over a five year period I had over 20 hours of general anaesthetic and never once felt sick. If you worry about it then your could make it happen so please speak to your doctor and get some help over that.

I had GA and had no nausea following the procedure. Sore throat and uncomfortable from the catheter for a few days but I felt pretty great really

I had no nausea, The Dr did ask me in the pre op if I had any problems with nausea though. I am certain with IV access any problem is dealth with immediately. My mouth was so dry, they probably gave a preventive med for this as standard procedure.

Thank yall for the comments, I have had surgery before for tumors, tonsils, and carterization, etc. Never woke up nauseas but that was before my stomach went to crap from giarrdia. I have always woken up shaking though.
