Magnesium and Warfarin

Hi - does anyone know if these two are contra-indicated. I read something earlier about that being the case so am looking for your views, if you have any.

The article said it wouldn’ t be anything to do with an overdose just that it has a reaction in the blood stream?

I asked my warfarin clinic this question and they replied that there was no known interaction . I self test and did not notice any difference in my INR readings

That is good news, thank you.

Ht Yatsura, I self test too and love it. My electrophysiologist knows and approves of my taking magnesium. And I have frequently been given an IV dose of magnesium when hospitalized if my level is too low. (Just a small piggy-back IV bag. And I;ve notived no INR result effects from taking with coumadin. But as always, it's best to run anything you do by your doctor You never know if they have learned something not yet available to us.

Hi Froggy

Sounds interesting. Can you give us a link to the article?

Best I could do with the link - hope it helps.

Froggy, thanks. I think the article may be suggesting an 800% increase in unbound Warfarin, with high levels of Mg. That sounds like significant potentiation if true.

This article mentions an interaction. nhs.uk/news/medication/effe...

On a quick google search I found a lot of references to an interaction but no recent scientific paper. My Warfarin leaflet doesn't seem to caution specifically against taking Mg.

My suggestion is for warfarin + magnesium takers to talk to their pharmacist and GP.

What about a more eye catching title for your post, I think you could be on to something important and there are so many posts flying by, that nuggets like yours are easily missed.

As a follow up I asked the pharmacist. Because he saw nothing on his screen he wasn't interested, he said it was up to me to believe whatever I liked.

Which is why I stopped taking my repeat scrips to Boots some time ago.

Peddling mentioned getting a red cell magnesium privately. I found a clinic nearby. £49 from medichecks.

I also take magnesium without problem.

Magnesium seems to be fine unless you have kidney problems, but if you have other health problems it would be best to check with your doctor in case they counterindicate it.
