This sometimes happens to me. Only ever as I am just going to sleep and it only ever happens once a night ,so just like you, I sit up and take some deep breaths then close my eyes again and it doesnt happen again. I think it happens more if I lie down flat so I prop myself up a bit. I dont know why this happens and would love to know if anyone has any answers. X

hi dedeottie

I too suffered with stopping breathing each time I dozed off - particularly so at night.

CDreamer has given a good description of sleep apnea which there is a test for.

Overtime I dropped off to sleep I would immediately awaken gasping from breath - and had to force myself to take in a breath. The GP I had then, repeatedly told me I didn't have sleep apnea as, he said, people with it do not actually wake up, they just stop breathing several times a night........not sure if this is the case though.

Mine was because of the Afib and a leaking valve - meaning that as my heart was misfiring it wasn't pumping the fluid as it should and also leaking where it shouldn't be. So my body accumulated so much fluid in the cavity around the lungs and heart and several other places in my body. The relevance being around the heart and lungs.

Took a time to get sorted as my previous posts will describe.

But on diagnosis of this, I have the bonus of being 2 stone lighter after 2 weeks of intravenous diuretics, and being able to sleep a whole night through after just a day of intravenous diuretics!

Things have really progressed from there!

Thanks for your reply. I am glad you are so much better. For now my AF is completely at bay ,well controlled with flecanide but I do have pauses which are sometimes longer than they would like and am wondering if this causes the problem. I am seeing my arrhythmia nurse soon so am going to raise the subject with her. X

What do you mean pauses

I had this and it was a result of fluid build up in my lungs caused by my weakened heart. They increased my diuretics and the problem disappeared. It also improved my ability to breath, generally.

I also had swollen ankles and still do if I miss my diuretics.

Boy Ogilvie if I miss my diuretics I am miserable. I have the swelling, but notice the shortness of breath first.

Ottis I understand the shortness of breath, but not at night. I already use a C-Pap at night and I think that has kept me from having that problem. I do at time have to take some deep breaths and keep myself calm and then my machine does a great job. I hope you find some good answers and get relief from this night breathing problems. My EP did tell me after my ablation I had PNI and the C-Pap would probably help me recover sooner.

....PNI...?

have come up with Princeton Neuroscience Institute... ..Psychoneuroimmunology.....Post Natal Illness.....a digital media company....sports and health supplement company........

...think it may likely to be something to do with the immune thing....?

What's a c-pap?

jessieMom2 profile image
jessieMom2 in reply to Ottis

It's my guardian angel. Ottis it is a machine that you use when you have sleep apnea. Stop breathing during the night while sleeping. Really hard on your heart. It pushes a certain amount of air pressure through your nose to keep your uvula open so you keep breathing.

Think I have now found what PNI is - Post Natal Illness.

I do have trouble knowing and remembering what all the abbreviations are!

I have made a list though and add to it each time a new one for me appears....

Sorry to hear that this is affecting you.

Ablation

I have sleep apnea ( stop breathing or very shallow respirations while sleeping) Was tested after 5 visits to ER in A fib each time middle of night. Started on C Pap machine... sleeping better not tired in morning. I also had ablation 7 months ago. I’m hopeful C-pap will help from flipping back to A fib. As I won’t work my heart so hard...

I too have a breathing problem, I find that I am holding my breath a lot and don't know why, not so bad now as I have a Pacemaker but still hold my breath. Having read a lot of blogs I feel that breathing and how we breathe has a lot to do with PAF, does anyone else feel the same???
