Night sweats

Hi there this is the first time I’ve asked a question on here. I follow the posts as my dad suffers with AF and has had 3 ablations and 5 cardioversions but none have longer than a year. Since having AF he suffers with frequent night sweats, has anyone else suffered these and if so do you have any advice please?

You don't say what medication your father takes. Might the night sweats be a side effect of one (or more) of those?

If you search (box top right) this Forum using 'night sweats' you'll see there have been several posts on the same topic and it does seem to be quite a common problem and there are messages with good advice amongst those.

Night sweats are something I haven't experienced myself, I'm afraid.

He just takes warfarin, a water tablet and 8mg of candestatin. He was back in rhythm until 4 weeks ago and now he is back in persistent AF. Thanks, I’ll do a search on that.

I had a poor reaction to dronedrone and since then, if I'm a bit off-colour I get night sweats that soak my PJs from shins to shoulders.

He has had dronedrone but was a while back now but no bad reaction. Thanks for your reply, he is the same, soaking wet from the neck down.

Hi Jin boy haven’t been on here for a while,hope that you are feeling ok. Did I read something about you having another tia or was I dreaming it? I have had a few news about my Af , when I went to get my repeat prescription they had discontinued my digoxin and other tablet and have given me Bisoprolol (only been on these a couple of months) went to have mt Pacemaker checked yesterday (as I’m very breathless) so they tweaked my pacer up to 70 from 60, problem I wonder now is. 1) my pacer up to 70 2) Bisoprolol cuts the heart beat down, is it me or does that seem wrong? Hi Sann;

that wasn't me with a TIA, in fact a couple of weeks back I was in a nature reserve clearing brambles by hand that were way over my head.

I agree with you that it does seem an odd mix with your treatment.

I've just heard from AF Association that they are going to shorten the video that I did with Nice Biscuits production company. It could be that you'll have the dubious experience of seeing me cutting down scrub and on a turbo trainer. Some of us were videoed in the pub after scrub clearing but somehow there isn't a drink to be seen dspite me drinking a pint of Guinness!!

No idea why but worth trying sleeping on soft bath towel and having towel on pillow as he may be less likely to wake cold as a result of damp sheets.

Yes that has worked for me at home. In hospital there was barely enough bed clothes anyway.

I have night sweats with short bouts AF. Usually only very short AF thankfully. I had an ablation in January. I have never proved the link but it appears to going beyond a coincidence.

After spotting this over a few months I realised that I havent had my usual regular night sweats since the ablation. Over time I sort of noticed they had stopped happening. Again nothing proven, just an observation.

I think there’s a link too but the consultants don’t think so. The sweats had stopped but now he is back in AF they have returned.. coincidence indeed.

I do wonder if this could be related to low thyroid or adrenals. It might be something worth researching on, or dicussing with the doctor.

Hi Polski he has had thyroid checked but apparently ok. They’ve not looked at adrenals but thank you will ask about that.

Unfortunately in the UK doctors have to go by the results of the thyroid tests, and some people find that they have symptoms whilst their results are 'OK'. You may find that taking supplements designed to improve the functioning of the thyroid will help (check first with doctor and pharmacist that they don't disagree with other meds/conditions). So it is still worth reading up.

Yes I have found that UK doctors scale of what is ‘normal’ isn’t that helpful as you say as still have symptoms. It’s quite annoying when they say they don’t know why but I agree I thought it was originally hormonal ie testosterone or something.

Hi ILC not specifically nights sweats but hot sweat I experienced years ago when going through the menopause have returned . I thought it might be down to the medication I take for AF, the GP doesn't know why I am getting them.

Being aware of this I try to make sure I don't get too hot in bed. The window is always wide open, bedding and nightware 100% cotton and a low tog 3 microfiber duvet.

Sleep is very important for AFers and it is worth doing all you can to improve it.
