Slow AF

I recently had a perfusion scan which involved an ECG. The technician who looked at the results said I was not in AF but the consultant said AF was present but was 'slow'. I've not heard of this before. Does any one have experience of slow AF?

Mine would not normally be accompanied by a fast heart rate. It's just irregular.

Thank you Koll

That makes things a bit clearer. My heart rate has slowed to a more 'normal' rate lately.

Apart from a couple of occasions my AF was usually in the 60s to 80s - but utterly random.

My mother has afib and tachycardia. Her heart is often times in tachycardia according to the ekg and her pacemaker scans. She used to have bradycardia, and her heart would slow to under 37 beats a minute and she would pass out. Now it speeds up. She is on 100 mgs of Metoprolol 2x a day, Eliquis, losartan, magnisium, and Lasix - 40 mgs daily. She is 91 yrs old and has had afib for over 25 yrs.

Her doctor has offered an ablation or amiodarone to correct this, but she refuses and chooses to live with her symptoms. After all - she is still here after 25 yrs. She doesn't want any surgeries or hard-core medications. (She says amiodarone is too "hard core" for her). Her cardiologist/EP lets her make her own decisions. He tries to manage her as best he can.

Hi Garrbo. Apart from two incidents of fast AF that got me to A&E and led to my diagnosis 6 years ago, when in AF it has always been slow for me, with a heart rate of 65 on average and bp of 105/68. ( I'm on atenolol and ramipril). This arrhythmia was paroxysmal to start with, then constant for 8 months when bisoprolol that I was then on was increased. I have been in normal sinus rhythm now for some months, which is great but I'm still battling side effects of the medication! That's another story!

By the way, my arrhythmia was simple to identify by feeling my pulse. Instead of a steady 4:4 rhythm it was more like waltz time with a bit of polka thrown in!

Keep well.

Thanks for that Silver40. I was a bit confused because my AF has always been fast.

Hello Silver40

I've just reread your reply and was reminded of a radio interview I heard recently that described the af rhythm as syncopated jazz I had a listen to some and it's pretty close. I prefer blues myself.

Brings a whole new meaning to 'dance to your own rhythm ' doesn't it?!

Hope you're keeping well.
