It is still nicotine you are taking into your body. Why risk it?

Hiya Karim,

So glad about your ablation and hope you will be a lot better.

I cannot say whether the other chemicals are safe, as I don't know, but I believe my sister gave up the fags and reduced her nicotine intake with these vapes. I think you can get them in different levels of nicotine content.

However, as you are doing so well, and it can only get easier as you go on, why bother with the vapes?

You could count up the money you've saved on fags so far and reward yourself, and it really can help you stay motivated to see some rewards piling up.

And maybe get some vitamin C and wide spectrum B vitamins to replace what the nicotine habit was 'stealing' from your body, especially as Vitamin C helps with healing after your op.

I think you've done brilliantly so far, and now you can build on it!

You have done so well and using electronic cigarettes would be a reversal. When you give up smoking you need to find something to do with your hands - try holding a pencil or take up knitting. If you feel desperate then clean your teeth with strong peppermint toothpaste. Polo mints are good too.

KarimYassin profile image
KarimYassin in reply to jennydog

Yes True ! Will try the mints :)

You've gone 18 days without, so keep it up.

I stopped 11 years ago and really don't miss it.

As for eFags, it's a different flavour of cancer as far as I'm concerned. Give it 10 years for all the guinea pigs to start dropping

Well e-cigs don't have the same nasty chemicals that fags do , but it's still nicotine and that's a stimulant so will almost certainly raise your heart rate and that's probably not good. However if you are really struggling with the quit then there are nicotine-free eliquids and that might be a way forward especially if you are missing the hand-to-mouth thing.

As for something to suck try Halls Extra-strong menthol or (and cheaper) Jakeman's 'Throat and Chest' menthol sweets (mind your teeth though - they are high in sugar). Both are better than ordinary mints when trying to quit.

For support try the Health Unlocked 'Quit Support' board - like this with lots of helpful friendly people.

If you've managed 18 days though you have done brilliantly well and if I were you I'd stay 'clean'.

Good luck!

Congratulations!! Try not to think about giving anything up. You freed yourself from a lifetime of enslavement. Take a little while to get accustomed to this life of freedom and enjoy. I stopped 4 years ago and i really regret not doing it earlier. Its all a big con by tobacco companies. Read Alan Carr's book

Enjoy your new freedom!!

Good luck and well done 🍀

If you managed to stop smoking, you are a God!! Try to keep that deity status. My Dad kept smoking right through his mouth tumors until they turned malignant (and then died of oral cancer a few years later). Just keep thinking how evil the cigarette industry is ... and hold on. I am dead impressed, it's so hard, but so so so worth it to quit and also avoid e-cigarettes, your poor heart will thank you (and so will your loved ones).

you should remember how bad it was when you were in a.fib, that will disappear your smoking wish😊😚..We have to be happy bc we had smoked, drinked and having soo much fun where we were younger and healthy..now we should be happy to stay healthy..There are some people that are taking drugs and still do not have any sickness, but we are special😊😊,we are stronger than our bad habits..enjoy your life, soon you will walk for many miles and feel happy..

Well I think half the problem is often people think they'll feel deprived, when actually as Dodie117 said, it's freedom from enslavement.

After all it's not the smoke or drink really that makes us happy, it's the time with friends and people we love. Somehow the smoke and drink are presented as the things people enjoy, whereas at most they only symbolise the enjoyment, relaxation or fun which actually are things we make for ourselves.

As you say, AF is the best motivator. After an AF bout (or ablation) is probably the most motivating time, a precious resource.

I had a bad experience with vapes and e-cigarettes, after my ablation went smoke free for about 3 months, but went and bought a vape so as I can do something with my hands when going out to social gatherings since drinking and smoking are bout out of the question lol...

Even though I was using a 0 nicotine juice , I would notice a 10-20 increase in heart rate after a vaping session. After about 3 days of vaping , my heart rate was all messed up , had a constant increase in resting heart rate, and started having mild episodes again.

My advice to you is forget it , its not worth it, even though its 0 nicotine, there are other chemicals in the juice that are harmful, especially to those with sensitive hearts like ours.

Yeah ur right Fmak ! It's just when I go to my friends place don't know what to do ! Hahaha I just eat !! As u said I'm not drinking at all now since it's been 21 days since my Ablation and don't smoke ! We are not allowed to drink later after the ablation ??

Fmak profile image
Fmak in reply to KarimYassin

Not allowed to do anything my friend , so get used to soberness :) You can drink a beer or two once a while but whats the use and wheres the fun in that? Only a tease if you ask me.. Its been 10 months for me now post ablation and still struggle with the temptations when going out , and sometimes i do slip up and have a few drinks.. which in turn lead to some episodes in the next few days.. Once you get an SVT it never really cures and goes away completely, even after an ablation.. drinking smoking caffeine etc.. are all risk factors that may bring it back.. its like playing with fire.. How old are you btw?

Hi, I have AF and I own a vape shop. Firstly well done for stopping smoking. I stopped four years ago and went onto a vape, I was diagnosed with AF a year ago. I find there is no link between AF and vaping and there is no research to link the two. There has been a lot of research about vaping and none indicates any link to cancer or heart disease. But nicotene can cause a higher heart rate. It doesn't with me or three of my regular customers who also have heart issues (I run a local shop not one of the high street chain stores) . Everyone is different I tell all my customers that. You may find sugary sweets increase your heart rate, mints less so as they have less sugar (I'm also diabetic). If you fo decide to vape go for a smaller device and zero to low nicotine. Find a non chain store that doesn't look like an Apple phone shop as they will be more helpful and not try and sell you the most expensive vape on the market.

What I have found is that there are lots of people who have opinions about vapes and almost all have done no research. There was a very good documentary on the BBC about them a couple of months ago see if you can find that to watch.

If you stay nicotine and vape free then do it but if you cant vaping is far safer than smoking. Good luck.

Thank u so much PaulDB.. really appreciated :)

I actually wanted to stop, and that is the biggest battle, if you don't really want to you wont.

I did read an excellent book entitled "Quit the easy way" by Dr Alan Carr. That totally did the trick, my dad read it and he had been a smoker from the age of 14 to 60 despite having had 2 heart attacks and AF. He managed to stop, as did my younger brother and we all highly recommend this book

I bought the book for my son when he was 22 and smoked a lot. It was the one thing I hadnt wanted him to start as I watched my mum exsisting on 24/7 oxygen as her lungs were totally messed up due to a lifetime of heavy smoking. To my amazement, he read the book (very slowly ) and when he had read the last page he stubbed out his ciggie and has never smoked again. His now wife had recently given up using the same book, just before they met and she says she would not have dated him if he had still been smoking. She is a wonderful daughter in law and they are very happy.

I can recommend that book to anyone.

Well done you. X
