Atrial flutter is a rapid, regular heartrate caused by a rogue circuit, usually located in the right atrium. The atrial rate can be very high - 300 bpm or more but usually the conduction to the ventricles is in the ratio of 2:1 or 3:1, although 1:1 is not unknown. Flutter carries the same stroke risk as AF and can itself lead to AF.

Atrial Flutter is sometimes triggered by atrial ectopic beats. Ablation of flutter has a high success rate - 90% or above I believe.

The heart's four chambers are the two atria at the top and the two ventricles below. Like medium and media, bacterium and bacteria or stadium and stadia (although the use of stadiums is creeping in and aquariums is probably more used than aquaria) the singular of atria is atrium, so right atrium and left atrium. Atrial and ventricular are the adjectives relating to atrium and ventricle. Thus fibrillation in the heart's upper chambers is atrial fibrillation.

Wot?

Actually I quite like stadiums, but I think we are stuck with media.
