Irritating cough

I haven't had a cold or cough for years, but since being on beta blockers and warfarin, it has been insistent. I have seen GP but apparently it is down to weather and atmosphere. Anybody else had these reactions?

Beta blockers are a complete no no for anybody with asthma so it is quite possible for this to be the problem.

Thank you BobD. I have never had any sign of asthma, but I wont rule anything out.

Hi Solara - I never used to get coughs or colds, but since taking heart medication like you I now do and they go on and on! So annoying!

Processing the medication uses up your stores of vital vitamins and minerals (eg magnesium!). Try taking a good multi-vitamin-and-mineral tablet, and 500mg x 2 (am and pm) of vitamin C (both best from a Health Food Store) for at least three months, and you should find the colds are much decreased. (It may or may not help the cough)

Look carefully through the list of side effects of all your medications as some can give you an annoying cough. Lisinopril is known to do this.

Thankyou all for your replies. Nice to know you are not on your own. I am on Bisoprotol Fumarate at the moment, and my problem does not appear on the list of side effects. Am seeing my regular GP on Friday, so hope springs eternal.

Over here in Germany it does. Side effect as listed: "bronchospasms". Happens to me too, sometimes without cause, sometimes I have a cold and when it is over I get this cough for months. I simply cannot take most betablockers. And I do not have asthma.

Agreed. I have always been suspicious of beta blockers and the medical profession are quick to connect it to asthma.

Hi, I have tried bisoprosol on 2 separate occasions and both times have resulted a very annoying cough! Both my GP and my chemist said it IS a common side effect of this drug!! Ask for an alternative!

I take ramapril which gives me an irritating cough too usually at night. You can change to an alternative they say but its such a difficulty getting used to new drugs Im just sticking it out. Pat

I took Ramapril for high BP and never stopped coughing I tried 4 other drugs before I found one that suited me and that was Ibersartan. Don't suffer un less you have to, my Dr at the time said I was imagining it!!!!!!! But later admitted that I was correct.

Ditto for me too, Pat. My cough was a lot worse on Bisoprolol and has much improved on the Slozem 240mg, Digoxin 250mcg and Warfarin and now is only noticeable to me at bedtime and during the night, intermittently, usually when I get up to go to the loo. It's a hard, dry, non-productive cough. When I got it checked out on Bisoorolol. GPs insist I've not got a chest infection.

I am 7 weeks post ablation and taking Eliquis twice a day. I developed a dry, non-productive cough 4 weeks ago. My GP told me it was asthma... never had a problem a day in my life before the ablation. I finally have an appointment with a pulmonary specialist on Friday... took forever to get an appointment. My GP put me on Spiriva but it's done no good.
