try putting your head over a bowl of steaming water,< very old fashioned > but it works, put a towel over your head as if making a tent,< take care with hot water >

if you can do 3 times a day cough will improve, chesty or dry cough,it does not matter,

Obras oil is good to,on a hanky, just breathe in slowly,

good luck

Put it on your balls of your feet with six on. Font know why but it does work night times obviously. Take care.

As Bob says sounds like you have sinus congestion dripping down your throat making you cough and feel sick. Sinus congestion is much thicker and tastes awful And sticks around your throat causing you to gag. As well as bobs suggestion I would try Covonia cough for chesty coughs, it melts the thick phlegm In Your throat ( that fur ball feeling I your throat).

Get well soon

It is crucial to stop irritating the back of your throat, with the ways you try to clear it, and the itchiness. Try keeping a bottle of water handy, even at night. Train yourself to take a mouthful or two. Throw it back and do a mini gargle if you can. Also, try avoiding swallowing anything coming down from the nose -- it only gets stuck in the throat area. You will probably find that sleeping on your back is less comfortable than on your side. Train yourself in the night to wake up, spit out, drink a little, go back to sleep until next time (hopefully longer than an hour later).

For more detailed advice head over to the sites about Cystic Fibrosis. They really are the experts. I have seen someone being trained, by a physiotherapist, to sense where the cough is coming from. If it is coming from deep in the lungs, they have to wait until the stuff is on the point of needing to come up, then to get it up in one quick go. They are trained in different kinds of cough, and the best timing.

Thanks for that! Lots of useful advice. My cough is only 4 days old, but it has made me so queasy. Just about to make a honey and lemon drink and a camomile at bedtime.

I personally know someone for whom coughing regularly leads to vomiting. They have to work hard to make sure that any cough does not develop into a fit of coughing. The vomiting, in turn, leads to loss of appetite and loss of weight. For feeling sick, slowly drinking cold water really helps me. Later, some hot tisan (herbal tea) of your choice might well calm the stomach and keep you hydrated. Chamomile tea is especially good, and it is cheap.

One method I use, is to have some salbutamol handy. Coughing tends to tense up the lungs which defeats the point of coughing. Salbutamol, the stuff used for Asthma, is well known, most people tolerate it well. It helps you to relax. It is especially useful when you start choking. I hope you never get to this point. The technique when you start choking is to sit up, shoulders back, and relax totally. This permits the deep inward breath.

I do not think much of the other cough medicines. Hot steam works for some but not for others -- it can I think (would need to check this) make it worse. But we are all different. With these matters, find what works for you.
