Apixaban

Having been on apixaban for 1 year. Just had the results of 1st fasting blood test. Was really worried about liver and kidney test, but great news all ok. Was diagnosed with af about year ago, but doctor said no need to get it checked out. This time I am going back in 8 weeks to get checked out again. So happy, yippee.

Great news waterlady. As soon as we are free of snow, I plan to get tested too, as the advice from the drug companies themselves is for annual checks for all 3 NOAC's.

Hi finvolva, thanks for your reply. When I had the blood test I did not bruise or hardly bleed. I am also going to get one of those id bracelets. Let me know how you get one. I am going to pluck up the courage to go abroad on holiday.

Just looking at you post Waterlady, you say you have had a fasting blood test for liver and kidneys after being on Apixaban for a year. I've been on it for 2 months and the GP has already given me a blood test form to have it done now, he hasn't asked for a fasting blood test. Is that essential?

Hi foresttime, the fasting blood test was also for for lots of things. I asked for it. At no time was I asked to go back for a check on apixaban. The doctor is now asking me to go back in a couple of months for a chat. In hindsight I should have gone sooner, but I did not know how important it could be. I am going to be much more forceful in the future. Is there many people at your surgery on it. I am the only one in the whole area. Keep me posted.

Hi waterlady, thanks for your reply. I'm also having my thyroid rechecked, I'm hypothyroid but keep going over the reference ranges. So maybe with you having other things checked the fasting isn't essential for liver and kidneys, I haven't heard or seen that it has to be a fasting blood test.

I'm not sure how many people are on Apixaban in our surgery, probably very few as the GP knew very little about it. I made the suggestion of Apixaban as well as my cardiologist. The Surgery is geared up for Warfarin, which is what I wouldn't go on.

Hi foresttime, thanks for your reply. There seems to be very little guidelines on apixaban, but that is because it is new. But I like to know, and on occasions got so agitated. I am trying to chill out, but a year on, still struggling , there are a lot of people worse off. Dont know about surgery, cross that bridge when it happens. Good luck with it. I have to have a non fasting test too ( after 2 months on apixaban) and think it's for liver function whereas with the renal test you have to fast. Renal test is done yearly I think

Hi rosyg, thanks for your reply. My test covered a range of things. Whether it was the right test, I dont know. No one said anything to the contrary. Had the test and results, which were good. I am still learning. Good luck. Keep me posted.

Thanks for your post, I have been on Rivaroxaban for over a year and no mention from my GP about annual renal function test - makes sense. You've triggered me into action to get this checked!

I'm on Adorable Apixaban and was told that the initial test should be around 3 months and then annually. It's certainly important to keep a watchful eye on the liver function apparently. Congratulations Waterbaby.

Hi, anticoagulatenow, maybe your doctor is more clued up on apixaban. Dont like taking any tablet, at least I dont pass out now. I have just found it so frustrating that even the chemist and dentist had never heard of it, and I could find very little info on it. But its great, it certainly beats warfrain.
